In a new report released by Rutgers School of Public Health, they examine the availability of specific maternity care services in New Jersey hospitals — including midwives, doulas, and lactation support. The work was done as part of an ongoing multi-dimensional evaluation of Nurture NJ. New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute assisted in this work and shared important hospital data from The Leapfrog Group to support the research.

On Monday, Kate Shamszad, Director of Policy at the Quality Institute, testified before the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee in support of Senate Bill 4018, emphasizing the need to improve access to early mental health supports for children. She highlighted an issue faced by families and providers across New Jersey: current reimbursement practices often delay mental health care until a formal diagnosis is made, despite strong evidence that early intervention is both effective and cost-saving. What Kate described aligns with our Children’s Mental Health Mapping Project, which calls for families to have earlier, easier access to preventive care.
