🍷✨ Sips & Science is back! Join us on September 25, 2025 from 4–8 PM at the Whitneyville Cultural Commons in Hamden, CT for an evening of connection, continuing education, and community. We will have two excellent speakers offering a total of 2 Ethics CEUs.

🎤 First up: Dr. Kelsey Ruppel will lead a thought-provoking session on “Establishing & Maintaining Meaningful Collaboration with Stakeholders.”
Instead of chasing “buy-in,” Dr. Ruppel invites us to reframe our approach - shifting from a solution-first mindset to a needs-first one. Learn practical strategies to establish and maintain meaningful collaboration with parents, teachers, administrators, and caregivers from assessment through intervention, with a focus on the assessment and treatment of dangerous behavior. 💡 CEUs | 🍷 Wines by Vino Crudo | 🌟 Networking

🎤 6:30 - Towards a Trauma-Sensitive, Compassionate Practice: Considerations for
Assessment and Treatment of Problem Behavior

Our field has been designed to address problems of social significance in a socially
meaningful way. This emphasis on showing concern for others by alleviating their suffering is embedded within our applied and effective dimensions which define our field (Baer et al., 1968; Wolf, 1978). The practice of our science, however, has not always made the subjective experience and the cultural perception of our procedures a central focus in the assessment and treatment of problem behavior. There is continued reliance on highly intrusive procedures and tactics of implementation that (a) produce bursts of dangerous behavior and emotional responding, (b) risk safety and rapport, and (c) endanger the overall acceptability and effectiveness of our approaches. In this talk, the meaning of compassion in the assessment and treatment of problem behavior will be discussed, followed by specific considerations and recommendations for how to incorporate a more trauma-sensitive, assent-based, compassionate approach in the identification of goals, and the selection and implementation of our procedures.

🕟 4:30 PM — Compassion in Supervision: Balancing Power, Ethics, and Respect

This session will focus on supervision practices rooted in compassion, understanding, respect, and dignity for supervisees. There is an inherent power differential present to supervisory relationships. As supervisors, we are duty-bound to provide both ethical and robust guidance to others within the field of ABA or just entering. Complicating matters is our own learning histories and experience with supervision. Together, we will unpack supervision practices both historically and currently to develop a compassionate-focused supervision model. Accounting for power dynamics, intersectional
sociocultural identities, and best practices in supervision requires work on the part of the supervisor. Attendees will leave with suggestions for how to improve supervision practices through the lens of compassionate care and respect.

CTABA Members are invited to an open meeting of the Public Policy and Legislative Outreach Committee meeting on Tuesday, April 8th at 5:30 PM!

We are at a very exciting point in the legislative cycle! The PPLO Committee has provided testimony on 5 bills; there has been response to 1, and 2 more are moving forward. These bills include legislation regarding eliminating our state licensure dues, increases in Medicaid rates, and other important changes in policy that would improve and/or impact behavior analysis in Connecticut.

Our lobbyist, Brian Sullivan, will be joining to explain the legislative process and discuss how we can support current and future initiatives. The meeting will last an hour and be packed with information!

Questions or agenda items can be sent to PPLO Chair, Arlene Kaye, at akaye@ctaba.org.

Members (organizational, professional, and associate) can register now, at no cost, at the link below.
