BARBARA BARRETT WARRINER

Barbara Barrett Warriner • July 14, 1943 - January 30, 2026

Barbara Barrett Warriner passed away at the age of 82 on Friday, January 30 in

Prosser, Washington. She was born on July 14, 1943 in St. Cloud, Minnesota, the

daughter of Florence Popilek Barrett and Kenneth J. Barrett. At the time, her father

Kenneth was serving as a soldier in the U.S. Army. Between 1944 and 1945, Ken

Barrett was transferred to the Bay Area and they moved to Salinas, California where

she grew up being doted on by her parents.

Barbara attended elementary school in Salinas and graduated from Palma High

School in 1961. She attended a private Catholic university, the College of Notre Dame

in Belmont, majoring in English with an emphasis in pre-1642 Drama and Literature. She earned her

secondary teaching credential in 1966. Barbara became employed by the Salinas Union High School

District and taught at El Sausal Middle School between 1967 and 1982, winning awards and honors for

her contributions. It was at El Sausal that Barbara met fellow teacher, Herbert Roscoe Warriner, and

they married on June 22, 1973 at the San Juan Bautista Mission.

Herb’s reminiscences of life in his hometown of Grandview led Barb’s parents, Pat and Ken Barrett, to

settle in Prosser upon their retirement, and Herb and Barb later followed them to Prosser in 1982.

Barbara joined the staff at Prosser High School and taught College Preparation British Literature,

Everyday English for Juniors/Seniors, Yearbook, Drama, and Heroes in Literature. As an exemplary

educator, she played a diverse number of roles beyond teacher. She became advisor, tutor, counselor

and mentor to numerous students, engaging them in literature, poetry, and drama and helping them to

earn honors and scholarships throughout her career. With husband Herb, she stayed active and engaged

in the high school community by attending and recording school activities until her retirement in 2013.

Barbara was also an active participant in the community and beyond. She was a presenter at the

National Reading Association Convention, at the Washington Association of School Administrators, the

Oregon State Chapter I Conference, and the Idaho State Teachers Conference. In addition, Barb was the

director and Co-Producer of Prosser Players in the Park, President of the Lower Valley Art Association,

Area Representative of Delta Kappa Gamma, and the Vice-President of Prosser Gardeners.

She continued to expand her knowledge and further her education by earning a Masters degree in

Secondary English Education in 1988, and enjoyed many other personal interests such as award winning

pencil drawing, photography, calligraphy and needlepoint arts.

Barbara Warriner will be remembered by many friends, past students, and colleagues for her

uncompromising dedication and drive to provide the very best in all her educational and personal

endeavors. She valued the members of her community and strove to share her talents with those around

her and engage with steadfast purpose to make an impact on the lives of others. Barbara is survived by

her nephew Bryan Hall and his wife Sonja. She was predeceased by her husband Herbert Warriner and

step-daughter Kellie Doyle.

Funeral services will be held at the Prosser Funeral Home at 1220 Sheridan Ave., Prosser, WA.

Today we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Dr. King reminded us that compassion, service, and love for one another are powerful forces for change. His message continues to inspire us to lead with kindness, stand for dignity, and care for our communities—especially during life’s most difficult moments.

On this day of remembrance, may we reflect on how we can serve others with empathy, understanding, and respect.

KEITH GILBERT SORENSEN

Keith Sorensen, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away the morning of December 17th, 2025, at the age of 74, in the loving embrace of his wife and daughter.

Born in Plentywood, Montana, on July 15th, 1951, to Ethel and Gilbert Sorensen, he grew up on his family’s farm in Dagmar, Montana, and graduated from Antelope High School. He went on to earn two associate’s degrees, one in business and one in law enforcement. He met the love of his life, Nicki, while in high school. At the time of his death, they had been married for just over 52 years. They got married on June 3rd, 1973, and three years later, their daughter, April, was born.

Though the highlight of his career was his time as a law enforcement officer, he spent 4 years in the navy, stationed at the Whidbey Island Naval Base. Shortly after his naval service, he began his long career in law enforcement, working in the Island County Sheriff’s Department. When his family moved to Wenatchee, he transferred to the Wenatchee Police Department, where he, eventually, served as the school resource officer and the D.A.R.E. officer, a position he loved to tell his family about while showering them with leftover D.A.R.E. memorabilia. His deep-rooted love of human connection and of helping people led him to win multiple Police Officer of the Year awards. During rodeo season, he enjoyed working as a security officer at the Ellensburg Rodeo.

Upon retirement, he and his wife moved to Prosser, Washington, to be closer to their now-adult daughter and her growing family, but he always kept in touch with many of his police buddies. Their annual trips to fish camp, a tradition kept up for over 40 years, were something he always looked forward to. He was a big fan of camping, both with his aforementioned friends and with his family. He never met a stranger; within hours of arrival at a new campground, he knew the best fishing spots, the best hunting spots, and was usually deep in conversation with an old-timer. When he wasn’t watching whatever sport was on T.V. at the moment—including, but not limited to, football, baseball, hockey, co****le, and ax throwing—he could be found online shopping, acting as the neighborhood’s personal weed-killer, satiating his massive sweet tooth with what his wife lovingly called junk food, or spending time with his family, who he cherished. He also loved woodworking, especially scrollsawing, and always had a project or two in progress.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Ethel Sorensen, his sister Lynne, his three brothers, Todd, Kevin, and Corey, and two nephews. He is survived by his wife Nicki, daughter April (Chuck) Wyckoff, three grandchildren, Emily, Clara, and Zachary, all of Prosser, WA, his sister Kathy (Ed) Burnum, of Valdosta, GA, and countless cousins. His loss has been deeply felt, and he will be missed—to know him was to love him.

A private service will be held at a later date.
