Our Story
Jagdish Sachdev
In 1967, Jagdish established SPECTRUM-INDIA on Thayer Street, Providence, RI. Some may remember the original name as Emporium India. Before moving to the U.S.,he spent his childhood years living near Delhi, India. As he grew older, he decided to study architecture. He made the decision to move to Canada, where he sought out and attended the least expensive university in North America. After college, he was employed in city planning, in RI, for five years. He then intended to move back to India. Right about that time, he received a letter from his brother asking for his help with starting an xport/import business. His response was "What the heck do I know about Export/Import?" Together they learned and quickly began the process of creating the company, which developed into a fast-growing retail and wholesale company called India Imports of RI. Jagdish remained here in RI, settling in Providence, SPECTRUM-INDIA has been at this location since the year 2000, and on Thayer Street since 1967. There is no place that Jagdish would rather be. You will still find him behind the counter on the weekend greeting his customers, while sharing a cup of tea and an interesting story, or his many words of wisdom. We like to call him The Guru of Thayer Street.
After so many years, customers have become friends and just pop in to say Hello to Jagdish!
