Dr. Michele Zager, Psychologist

Dr. Michele Zager, Psychologist I am a licensed psychologist. I provide individual therapy to adults ages 18-29 and students attend

I offer individual psychotherapy sessions and specialize in working with young adults ages 18-29 and students attending to the demands of college or graduate school. I believe that this time period is critical to identity formation and establishing healthy skills, habits, and narratives for life while also presenting many specific developmental challenges around independence, career choice, intimate relationships, and exploration of values. I most often work with individuals who are struggling with adjustment and life stage transitions, anxiety, depression, identity concerns, relationships, stress management, and previous trauma. I aim to develop a positive therapeutic relationship with clients to provide a supportive, respectful, and compassionate environment of empathy and acceptance. My approach is collaborative and integrative, which is flexible enough to vary and evolve with the individual’s needs. I draw upon developmental, psychodynamic, relational, mindfulness-based, and cognitive and behavioral approaches and interventions. I believe in creating an atmosphere that supports development through increased self-awareness of patterns and integration of interpretations, growth of adaptive skills, and a balance of acceptance and change. I aim to help clients recognize their own unique strengths and goals. Through our work together side by side, clients move toward self-compassion and a life that aligns with their personal values. I have over ten years of experience working with students attending a range of colleges and universities working in a counseling center, in academic advising, in residence life, and with student leadership development. I have trained and worked at the Roger Williams University Counseling Center in addition to training at Butler Hospital in the Women’s Partial Program (DBT), and Eating Disorders Program, and a therapeutic residential school. Additionally, I have a commitment and interest in the experience of art and design students, with my research focused on unique emotional and interpersonal experiences of students choosing to study visual art and design. I am interested in the use of creative outlets for managing and communicating emotions and the connection of mindfulness to well-being and to the arts. The fit between therapist and client is essential to creating space to be open and vulnerable, to allow reflection, and to permit personal growth. It is one of the most important factors for treatment outcomes. I hope that in your search for a therapist, you find someone with whom you feel comfortable, connected, and supported.
