Happy Flag day!

Today is Flag Day! More than 10,000 Flags have been flown across the United States in honor of all organ and tissue donors, donor families and those who have received the Gift of Life through transplantation. Thank you to all of the hospitals, funeral homes, DMVs, State Houses, families, and businesses who fly the Donate Life flag to honor donation and transplantation. Donate Life America 💙💚

This week, through the generosity of the donating public, New England Donor Services recovered its 3,000th heart for transplant since heart donation began in the region in 1982. Today, NEDS leads the nation in the recovery of hearts from donation after circulatory death (DCD) donors, recently identified by the National Academy of Sciences as an important strategy to address the organ shortage.

NEDS’ dedicated staff work across New England 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to support families of donors through the donation process, while coordinating the surgical recovery, preservation, transport and allocation of organs to patients on the national waitlist. In 2021, NEDS set a record for organ donors in the region, recovering organs from 451 deceased individuals, leading to 1,228 organ transplanted.

The middle child of three sisters, sociable Anya was usually the center of attention among her family and friends. As an athletic high school senior with a great sense of style, she had big plans to move to New York City and study fashion after graduation. Sadly, just after her 18th birthday, Anya died by su***de, leaving her family heartbroken and grieving. Anya’s mom, Kaija, was devastated and trying to grasp that the bright future she had once envisioned for Anya would not come to be. Then, she received news that brought a small ray of hope in a very dark time: Anya had registered to be an organ, eye and tissue donor. In the midst of unbearable pain, Kaija and her family found a sense of peace knowing that although Anya was gone, she would help many others in need. Through cornea donation, Anya was able to restore sight to 2 people, and her donated tissue healed 2 young burn victims through skin grafts. An additional 83 others were helped by Anya’s bone and tissue donations. Ultimately, Anya’s final gifts did more than heal the lives of her recipients, they helped her family cope with their grief and begin their own healing. 💙💚 Register your decision to be an organ, eye and tissue donor at RegisterMe.org or in your iPhone Health App.
