The Roger Williams Medical Center (RWMC), located in the Elmhurst section of Providence, has served the community’s health care needs since 1922. Along with corporate parent CharterCARE Health Partners and as a major teaching affiliate of Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM), this academic medical center has sustained fully accredited ACGME teaching programs for more than 40 years. RWMC includes a 220 bed acute care hospital, outpatient practice in primary care and medicine subspecialties, including the Resident Clinic. More than eighty graduates of the training program now practice in Rhode Island, making it one of the principal providers of skilled physicians in the area. All RWMC teaching faculty hold academic appointments at BUSM. The sponsored training programs are as follows: Internal Medicine, Hematology-Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Pulmonary, Rheumatology, Dermatology, Dermatopathology
Our academic affiliation also ensures that individuals and families in Rhode Island have access to the most up-to-date medical knowledge, diagnostic and treatment procedures. This designation gives us the privilege and honor of teaching future generations of physicians in the latest medical practices
In August 2011, the Department of Medicine welcomed a new Chair of Medicine, Steven M. Sepe, MD, PhD, an immunology-infectious disease specialist with a thoughtful and aggressive business plan for the Department. We have already witnessed expansion in Gastroenterology, General Internal Medicine, Primary Care, Pulmonary and Hematology–Oncology programs as well as additional support for Infectious Diseases. These are exciting times for us and we envision great things in our future.
