This evening I was feeling a lot of internal energy, a restlessness that demanded my attention. I sat and went inward with mindfulness, welcoming all feelings with a quiet, yet witnessing mind.

As I became still, discharged energy through tears and breath work, my heart began to speak ….. get to the water. I listened and 30 minutes later found myself at the beach sitting comfortably in a chair, toes in the sand, with a new book (I recommend it!)…. Plus my two older children and some surf boards.

The sunset was majestic and the sounds of waves crashing was a calming gift to my nervous system.
I became full of love, joy and awe.

When we take moments to pause, go inward and say “hi!” to ourselves we begin to learn how beautifully our present moment energies/emotions provide us with wisdom and insights.

We often fight doing so due to protective defenses we developed as children and fear of the emotions being too much or too hard to experience.

Once we learn to go towards and truly feel into the energies, bringing loving compassion to whatever arises, our world expands with depth and connection we didn’t know was even possible.

Breathe into the sensations, feel them through your body (verses your mind) and be still with mindful awareness. This is when our subconscious helps unveil info stored in our bodies and embodiment becomes a compass if we choose to listen.

We may have an impulse to curl up, cry, shake, dance, hug, say words, etc. Let what wants to happen happen.

Take time to listen. You’re being guided to feel your feelings and work to discharge the present energy in healthy ways, preventing them from being stored in your body. You will learn what wants to be said or what you may need in the moment for comfort and support.

I invite you to sit, bring your attention inward and say hello to self today :)

Our collective is experiencing the unimaginable. Guns have become the top injury-related cause of deaths for children in the United States. Guns.

Parents are packing lunches and waving goodbye to children without knowing it’s their last precious moments together or with the reality, fear and unknown that it might be. Hearts and lives shattered in ways that are incomprehensible to imagine.

Children’s sense of safety and innocence is gone and the residual trauma of gun violence, mass shootings, and lack of protection is profound and will continue to impact many generations to come.

Please invite and greet all feelings that are present. The sadness, heartbreak, fear, anger, disgust, hopelessness. Your grief is valid, welcome and important.

When we stay connected to all this internal energy, it informs us with the essential wisdom needed to steer us towards proactive change.

Let these intense emotions fuel us verses defeat us. Let them generate a loudness that bands together as a collective, turning whispers into screams and making changes that will shift our current reality into a safer and humane one.

Take a moment to be still, lean in, greet and comfort all this pain. Send loving energy and strength to all the victims, loved ones and communities impacted by gun violence- as well as to yourself.

Reach out to your people for support. You are not alone.

Many of my clients are highly sensitive beings. This superpower has them acutely aware of the sights, sounds, tastes, smells and textures around them. They feel the energies within and around them strongly which, when tuned into, provides great insights into feeling states and the environment around them. Knowing this, it is a beautiful form of self care to create spaces around us that provide pleasure to our sensual selves. Leaning in to what sensory experiences provoke calm, warmth, awe, pleasure, love, etc is a helpful way to elevate our mood states and orient towards gratitude and beauty. I invite you to slow down this week to notice things that catch your eye like a magical full moon, a landscape, a funky outfit; music that vibrates through you or prompts you to dance; foods that warm your belly or melt in your mouth, etc.
I love to create spaces that feel welcoming and cozy to me… candles, crystals, meaningful art, plants, music. These pics are a sample. I want to thank my talented high school classmate for creating my sweet Hawk & hummingbird prints and for her amazing poisonous plant print! 💜Natalie

It is truly beautiful to witness honor her mental health and say “No”, this doesn’t feel right and is not healthy for me in this moment. Her value is not defined by Olympic medals, but rather her true essence and ability to love and listen to self.

Do you often disconnect from self to please others or prove your worth? Imagine honoring your needs as an effort to show up fully in this world?

Today, a dear mentor sent me this poem from Gregory Orr’s new collection. These wise words immediately resonated & validated my current experience.
My heart was shattered a few months ago & I’ve been wading in deep depths of grief since. I often vascillate between gut wrenching pain & an energetic sense of gratitude for the unexpected experience I was thrown into. Throughout this time, I’ve had a powerful knowing that this grief is a gift... an invitation to turn inward & trust that this hurt isn’t meant to harm, but rather open self into spaces of my life that are in alignment with my soul’s purpose & path. I’ve always been resistant to venture out of my comfort zones, as rigidity has served a purpose of keeping me from truly being embodied & able to sit in the discomfort that comes with uncertainty. When grief explodes you open, you don’t have much of a choice other than to feel it. It hurts. Badly. So many days & nights of flooding tears & deep belly sobs. Simultaneously, I’ve been relying on my intuition that the Universe is guiding me somewhere new & important. First stop: INWARD. Self care. Self love. Welcoming whatever I’m feeling in each changing moment & greeting it with compassion & gentle inquisition. I’ve gotten to know the younger me & the current me & given them the attention I often direct outwards to others. I’ve noticed how I often leave self behind & out of the mix... validating young narratives that I don’t get love & care, just provide it. So, In efforts to reclaim self, I’ve already taken two vacations, learned to surf, created lunch breaks during my work day, & established a healthy balanced ratio of time I give to others & time I give to self. Second stop: paying attention to the deep knowing that this experience is bigger than me.... welcoming & exploring my intuitive & empathic abilities through spiritual growth & expansion. The excitement I am feeling in these new realms is a match for the energetic grief. A lovely equilibrium. “What comes next is all I hope to master.” 💜Natalie

07/07/2020

Self criticism and/or minimization is often a disguised and learned strategy to pull ourselves away from feeling the intensity of our emotions in the moment. I often witness people tear up and then quickly say “I’m stupid to be upset about this” or “I hate myself for how sensitive I am”, etc. These statements to self quickly pull them out of their sadness. Someone else I meet with may be angry at a loved one and start raising their voice or clenching their fists. Rather than allow the anger to stay present, they may say “I’m such a jerk, I don’t deserve their love anyways.” All of a sudden, their fists unfold and relax and they collapse away from anger.

This strategy may serve us initially, however over time it creates low self esteem and poor connections to self and others (among many other consequences).

In order to re-wire this pattern, practice these steps over and over again:
1. witness the critic share unkind or dismissing words,
2. Pause to slow the automatic action from continuing
3. Bring awareness to self and ask, “What was I feeling right before I started to put self down?”
4. Welcome that feeling and work to sit with the uncomfortable energy it brings
5. Greet this emotion with the care and compassion we often long for (or start by just imagining doing this.

Know this will not feel natural, believable or helpful right away. It takes repetitive and consistent effort to create change. Therapy can be a helpful form of self-study. Your therapist can help identify when you are popping out of feeling with self criticism or minimization and gently invite you to pause and stay with the feeling that wants to happen and be felt. A new experience of meeting feeling with curiosity, care and trust can be a powerful way to build a stronger sense of self and reestablish organicity of your feelings states.

Conflict is often constructive.

From a young age we are often wired to run away from conflict or go towards it in an explosive and accusatory manner. When we disagree with, or are disappointed by someone, we become emotionally activated. Feelings of anger, pain, sadness tend to flood in. Some people are programmed to shut down and be quiet in an effort to turn off the uncomfortable feelings. Others are programmed to pursue and become reactive in this space. Both of these responses may not be serving us well towards the goal of constructive conflict. Rather, they tend to be avoiding or pushing away of others which ultimately doesn’t get our own needs met.

We can learn to expand our capacity to hold space for difficult feelings. We can welcome our internal state, identify and sit in disappointment (or other feelings that surface with conflict). We can then identify these feelings, sit with and expand into them, and then put words to, and express them vulnerably. Imagine sharing your feeling state to the other person, being heard and held safely as they sit with the feelings triggered by your words? Imagine the person then reflect and express calmly how your words land on them? It is when we can have these types of difficult, emotionally intelligent and non-reactive conversations that it leads to a deeper sense of knowing and seeing each other. Ultimately, expanding and deepening the relationship and sense of respect for each other.

This is especially important as we are working to call out racism around us. Let’s lean into the idea that it is compassionate to address someone’s’ behavior rather than just cut them out.

As protests diffuse and people unmute themselves, it will be essential to sustain our contributions to anti-racism conversations and actions. Many people I have spoken with are feeling overwhelmed with the belief that their actions will make little dent into the large systemic and institutional changes that need to happen. But, little by little amounts to a LOT. Sustained effort over a long period of time are needed...not intense spurts of effort leading to burnout and collapse. A LIFESTYLE change consisting of small actionable steps each day is required. What if we all commit to investing 15-30 minutes a day listening to POC’s TED talks, movies, podcasts or reading literature postings or research articles? What if we set up a monthly donation to a charity that is creating effective change? What if we journal daily about what we have learned or unlearned or what information or story has impacted us deeply? What if we attend to our fears and continue to have tough conversations with friends and family? What if we keep magnifying the wisdom and voices of black women and men doing important work to change our broken system?

Imagine people implementing this lifestyle change over the next year and beyond. Little by little change is possible.
What action can you commit to over the next year?
