Center for Health and Justice Transformation A non-partisan organization dedicated to advancing health equity in the criminal legal system.

The Center for Health and Justice Transformation (formerly Prisoner Health and Human Rights) is a non-partisan organization whose mission is to advance health equity in the criminal justice system. In pursuit of this mission, CHJT provides technical assistance, training, capacity-building support, and develops innovative projects that work in unison to transform our criminal justice system. We envision a criminal justice system that centers equity, is less punitive, and redefines public safety. That system decriminalizes addiction, mental illness, and poverty; reduces incarceration, prepares individuals and communities for reentry; and seeks to mitigate the collateral consequences of conviction and incarceration.

We are honored to be the 2023 recipient of the Achievement in Equity Award from the National Consortium on Racial and Ethnic Fairness in the Courts. Thank you to the RI Judiciary and Judge Melissa DuBose for the nomination!
Partnering with the Committee on Racial and Ethnic Fairness in the Courts in RI is setting a national model of what can be achieved when community and our systems come together to transform lives. You made space and time to listen to the directly impacted,
and then you acted! To date, nearly $2.5 million in court fines and fees have been remitted for Rhode Islanders!
