July 21st marks Zero HIV Stigma Day, spearheading a movement and uniting people, communities, organizations, and entire countries to raise awareness and take action against HIV stigma, which reinforces and amplifies the HIV pandemic and related inequalities. This year's theme is "Beyond Labels: Redefining HIV Narratives." While occasions such as World AIDS Day bring needed awareness to HIV in general, there has never been a global awareness day specifically to challenge the impact of stigma, which persists despite biomedical advancements in HIV prevention and care.

Today is Independence Day, also called Fourth of July or July 4th, and it is the annual celebration of nationhood. It commemorates the passage of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. The Declaration announced the political separation of the 13 North American colonies from Great Britain and reflected widespread dissatisfaction in the colonies with increased British control. Colonists especially opposed a series of unpopular laws and taxes enacted by Britain beginning in 1764.

In Fourth of July celebrations, fireworks signify national pride and patriotism and have been part of Independence Day in the United States since its first celebration, in 1777. The Congress had voted in favor of independence from Great Britain on July 2nd but did not actually complete the process of revising the Declaration of Independence until two days later.

Juneteenth, or Freedom Day is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the "ending" of slavery in the United States. June 19th, 1865 This holiday is considered the longest running African-American holiday and has been called America's second Independence Day. Freedom should always be celebrated.

Today is HIV Long-Term Survivors Awareness Day . First observed in 2014, it’s a day to honor long-term survivors of HIV and raise awareness about their needs, issues, and journeys.

The selection of June 5th for this annual observance coincides with the anniversary of the first official reporting of what became known as the AIDS epidemic on June 5, 1981, when the CDC first reported on five cases of a mysterious disease affecting young gay men. June 5, 1981 is considered the start of the AIDS pandemic.

HIV Long-Term Survivors represent a diverse group of people, including:
- People diagnosed with HIV before the advent of Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy or HAART in 1996. They make up about 25% of all people living with HIV & AIDS. 1.2 million people are living with HIV in the U.S. That makes about 300,000 long-term survivors, defined as individuals who acquired HIV before 1996 and the introduction of HAART.
- People who have been living with HIV for over 10 years are also part of this group.
- People born with HIV or who acquired the virus as babies and have also lived with HIV for decades.
