Today is National Native HIV/AIDS Awareness Day which was first observed in 2007 on the first day of Spring.

The day acknowledges the invaluable contribution of Native communities in ending the HIV epidemic, underscoring the significance of Native visibility in national HIV strategies and funding opportunities. The National Native HIV Network plans the observance each year and it is a national mobilization effort designed to encourage American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians across the United States and Territorial Areas to become educated, get tested, engage in prevention, and seek treatment for HIV.

Today is National Women & Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. focuses efforts on priority populations outlined in the NHAS including Black women and youth aged 13-24 years.

The Office on Women’s Health (OWH) in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services leads National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

In the United States, about 23% of people living with HIV are women and, in 2021, women made up 20 percent of new diagnoses, according to CDC data. The highest number of new diagnoses were among women ages 25 to 44. Advances in testing, treatment, and prevention have resulted in progress toward the nation’s goal to end the HIV epidemic by 2030.

Today is "HIV is Not a Crime Awareness Day," which was first observed in 2022 by the Sero Project in collaboration with the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation. It is a day that calls to end the unjust criminalization of people living with HIV and an opportunity to amplify the voices of those who have been criminalized based on their HIV status.

Living with HIV is not a crime, but in more than 30 U.S. states, people are being imprisoned due to their HIV status. HIV criminalization laws consist of using a person’s positive HIV status in a criminal prosecution, increasing charges or punishments because the person has HIV; promoting stigma rather than public health.

Key details regarding this awareness day include:
Goal: To repeal laws that criminalize people living with HIV, reduce stigma, and align policies with modern science.

Significance: It serves as a platform to highlight how these laws disproportionately affect people living with HIV, often without consideration of actual transmission risk or intent.

Action: Advocacy efforts focus on reforming state and federal laws to prevent discrimination and ensure human rights.

TODAY is National HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD), which was first observed in 1999 and is a day to acknowledge how HIV disproportionately affects Black people.

Black communities have made great progress in reducing HIV. Yet racism, discrimination, and mistrust in the health care system may affect whether Black people seek or receive HIV prevention services. These issues may also reduce the likelihood of engaging in HIV treatment and care. NBHAAD is an opportunity to increase HIV education, testing, community involvement, and treatment among Black communities.

Engage: Discussing ways to better involve the black community in HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment efforts. This can include outreach programs, community partnerships, and utilizing local leaders and influencers to promote HIV testing and destigmatize the conversation around HIV/AIDS.

Educate: Focusing on improving HIV/AIDS education among black youth and adults. This could cover the latest research, treatment options, understanding of PrEP and PEP medications, and debunking myths that contribute to stigma and discrimination.

Empower: Highlighting success stories and strategies that have effectively empowered black individuals living with HIV/AIDS. Empowerment can be through advocacy, policy change, access to care, and support systems.
