Sometimes the first Yoga Sutra is considered just an intro, almost like the cover page to a book: now the explanation of yoga begins. But it can also be interpreted as the main instruction – you are practicing yoga (union) when you are present here and now.

On the surface, that sounds so simple, right?

But it doesn’t necessarily feel easy in real life to remain connected to NOW. Since most of us have spent decades training our minds to pay attention to the past & the future, it is a practice to ask the mind to stay connected to NOW.

I invite you to join me (Janie Ganga) for my monthly event Wisdom & Chill at Santosha Yoga – live via Zoom. This class combines Wisdom (Sutra 1.1) and Chill (yoga nidra). I use the Translation and Commentary of The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali by Sri Swami Satchidananda as a starting point. I’ll share insights from my teachers in the I AM Yoga (Integrative Amrit Method of Yoga) tradition and my own lived experiences. And then I’ll facilitate an interactive conversation with the group about how we might apply this Sutra in everyday life.

For the second half of the class, you’ll lay down and get comfy for I AM Yoga Nidra – a fully-guided meditation for an integrative experience of NOW.

An evening to gather as a Sangha (community) on the Path of Love. Swami Kripalu (1913-1981) told us that he was a Pilgrim of Love on the Path of Love and his Teachings have inspired SO MANY yoga teachers and practitioners.
We’ll honor his teachings PLUS reflections and stories from teachers who were part of the Kripalu Ashram years. We hope that the many generations of Ashrams may be able to come together to honor all they have discovered for themselves and shared with all of us – through the practices of Yoga, Meditation, Let Your Yoga Dance, Pranayama, and more.
How Swami Kripalu’s teachings have inspired us.
A meditation given to us by Swami Kripalu as his “gift to the West.”
Hearing about the Ashram Years and how the communities & practices from those times have helped to deepen our practices.
Cost:
Free - Santosha Members & Staff and anyone with limited finances
$13 - to support your own attendance
$26 - suggested, if you are able to support both your own attendance and 1 more

Here at Santosha Yoga, we are deeply inspired by the messages from the Venerable Monks – that we all have the ability to OUTSHINE the darkness and negativity with our own inner light. Tomorrow, Tues 2/10, they are completing their 2,300 mile walk from Texas to Washington, DC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All of us need reminders that we are the Light. And practices that help us to strengthen and nurture that Inner Light… especially in the darker days of mid-winter. Join us at Santosha Yoga (always live via Zoom!) for one of our Weekly Classes. Plus, our special Monthly Class Wisdom & Chill on Thurs 2/12 at 7pm ET – when will talk about these Truths shared by the Monks and then we’ll integrate with a fully-guided I AM Yoga Nidra.

☯️ 8 Brocades Qi Gong (Ba Duan Jin) is a type of Qi Gong (one of the 5 branches of Traditional Chinese Medicine) consisting of eight forms of slow, gentle, mindful movements, meditation and breathing. Each movement emphasizes healing and facilitates energy flow to certain areas relating to the physical and energetic bodies. Some of the numerous benefits that come from regular Qi Gong practice include improved energy, vitality, strength, flexibility, balance and coordination. Qi Gong has been known to aid in reducing blood pressure, headaches, depression and anxiety, just to name a few things.

🕉️ Followed by Yoga Nidra guided meditation facilitated by Bob. The practice of Yoga Nidra, also known as Yogic Sleep, allows one to achieve a state of complete relaxation while remaining awake and fully aware of your surroundings. Peeling back the physical, energetic, mental, emotional, and spiritual layers within us, the body, mind, and spirit have the opportunity to synchronize with the rhythm of nature. Simply by Listening.

What are the “7 movements of the spine”? Glad you asked! They are:
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
1) Extension (back bending)
2) Flexion (back rounding)
3) Side Bending to One Side
4) Side Bending to the Other Side
5) Twisting in One Direction
6) Twisting in the Other Direction
7) Long Tall Spine with Natural Curves

Why are the 7 movements of the spine good for people of all ages?
Practicing movement with breath mindfully helps to keep your body more limber and can help you to avoid injury, build strength and dexterity, and overall have a better awareness of your body and the many options you have available thanks to the 33 vertebrae in your spine!

Chair Yoga is a great class to fit into the flow of your day. It’s a good option if you have challenges to get up and down from the floor. But even if you don’t, if you sit a lot or just want a yoga class that is easier to access – we highly recommend this class with Janie Ganga (https://tr.ee/QshKebz3lR)!

Have you tried Chair Yoga with Janie Ganga yet? You may be surprised that it can be Dynamic – you can dial up the level of challenge if you want. Or keep it more mellow if that works better for you and your body for any reason. We use gravity to build strength and play with balance. We work with the fingers, toes, ankles, and wrists to maintain and build dexterity, circulation, and brain health. And we end with a chanting meditation that’s Relaxing – and also happens to be a well-documented technique for managing anxiety & depression.

Check it out on Tuesdays at 10:30-11:30am ET
