Congratulations to our latest DAISY Award honoree: Mercedes Barboza.

Her exceptional care and attention to detail made a lasting impact during a deeply emotional time for one patient and her family.

The patient shared, “Mercedes showed empathy and compassion, willing to be a shoulder to cry on. She went above and beyond to make sure my stay was comfortable… and even surprised us with a candlelight dinner to help ease our minds after our son was taken to the NICU.”

Our state’s blood supply has dropped below a 2-day inventory—well under the 7-day level needed to support hospital and patient needs. Summer vacations and school breaks have slowed donations, just as trauma cases rise.

We are saddened by the passing of Alan Hassenfeld, whose decades of generosity and advocacy helped shape the mission of Women & Infants Hospital and Care New England Health System.

As Judith Dickstein Remondi, Board Member at Care New England, shared: "Alan Hassenfeld was a rare light in the world - a kind, smart, and generous soul whose passion for philanthropy knew no bounds. At Care New England and Women & Infants Hospital, Alan brought his abundant enthusiasm to support positive change and build a better future for our community. As Honorary Co-Chair for the Campaign to Deliver Our Future, which raised funds for Women & Infants Hospital's new Brown University Labor and Delivery Center, his leadership and generosity have left an indelible mark on generations of families. Alan inspired all of us to lead with heart and to believe in the power of giving. We will miss him dearly."

We extend our deepest condolences to his loved ones and all who were fortunate to know him.
