Synthetic thyroid hormone is manufactured in a laboratory whereas natural thyroid medication is sourced from animals (usually pigs or cows).

Natural thyroid hormone is animal thyroid gland that is removed, desiccated (dried out), and then made into a tablet. In The US the predominant “natural” thyroid hormone is Armour Thyroid. It was originally developed by the Armour meat packing company (the same company that makes canned Armour Vienna Sausages). Armour thyroid was sold to Forest Pharmaceuticals in 2001. One of the proposed advantages of “natural” thyroid preparations is that it contains two thyroid hormones (T4/T3) as opposed to levothyroxine which only contains T4. One of the disadvantages of Armour thyroid type products is that each batch tends to have different amounts of medication. T3 is manufactured synthetically as Cytomel (liothyronine) which can be prescribed for patients.

The literature on the use of natural thyroid products is mixed with some studies showing a benefit and some not. In my opinion, there are certain clinical scenarios where natural thyroid products should not be used, namely in the setting of thyroid cancer or pregnancy.

Radiofrequency ablation, often referred to as RFA, is a non-surgical technique that is used for large benign thyroid nodules and in select cases thyroid cancer and primary hyperparathyroidism. RFA involves the use of an electrode that is directed under ultrasound guidance and then activated to heat the surrounding tissue and destroy a thyroid nodule while preserving normal thyroid tissue and vital structures in the neck. It is a targeted therapy performed under real time ultrasound imaging to preserve the surrounding tissue in the neck. Benign thyroid nodules can be shrunk by over 80% by the use of RFA, thus relieving cosmetic or compressive symptoms (difficulty swallowing, pressure in the neck, or visible neck swelling). The procedure is performed in the office, with local anesthesia and does not require an incision or hospitalization.

January is Thyroid Awareness Month, a time to recognize the importance of thyroid health and increase understanding of thyroid conditions.

Some interesting facts about the thyroid:

- Your thyroid produces hormones (T3 and T4) that dictate the speed at which every cell and organ—including the heart, brain, and liver—operates.

- An estimated 20 million Americans have some form of thyroid disease, but up to 60% remain unaware because symptoms like fatigue and weight changes are often mistaken for normal aging or stress.

- Women are 5 to 8 times more likely than men to develop a thyroid condition, with 1 in 8 women expected to experience issues during their lifetime.

- To function, the thyroid requires iodine, which it "traps" from your diet (mostly from iodized salt and seafood) to manufacture its hormones.

- Most thyroid cancers have a high five-year survival rate—approximately 98% for women and 93.6% for men—and are highly treatable when detected early.

January is Awareness Month. Your thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland located in the lower front of your neck. The thyroid gland produces thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormones are released into your blood and carried to every tissue in your body. Thyroid hormones help your body use energy, stay warm, and keep your brain, heart, muscles, and other organs working normally.

Did you know that thyroid symptoms can be very non-specific, meaning that they can be caused by other medical problems or issues?

Thyroid nodules may be noted as difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, or swelling in the neck.

Hypothyroidism, an underactive thyroid, may present as fatigue, cold intolerance, weight gain, constipation, dry hair or hair loss, or irregular me**es in women.

Hyperthyroidism, an overactive thyroid, may present as heat intolerance, weight loss, diarrhea, fast heart rate, anxiousness, development of a tremor, and as irregular menstrual cycles in women. In some cases of hyperthyroidism there can be bulging of the eyes.

Thyroid disease in children is often reflected by poor growth, delayed puberty, and in severe cases, developmental delays.
