I have often written here and other places about the wonderful results I have seen in my clients undergoing ketamine assisted psychotherapy. Ketamine is a marvelous tool that stimulates neuromodulation in the brain. Taking advantage of its neuroplasticity allows the brain to undergo significant change that can be literally life changing and life-saving.

Lately, the experiences I have had with my clients while in treatment has led me to ponder an even deeper part of the ketamine experience: the exploration of the subconscious. We all have a conscious self, that which is in our awareness, and an unconscious self, that which we are unaware of. Under the proper conditions, ketamine can help access the unconscious mind. Through exploring this space in a curious and observational way, we can come to understand thoughts, emotions, and even behaviors in a new and profound way. We can process, heal, and let them go. We can focus inward to get to know ourselves better. We gain the opportunity to see ourselves and past situations with a new perspective that can quite literally set us free. With the guidance of trained and licensed professional therapists, the ketamine journey can help unveil who you really are.

I hold it as a sacred privilege to guide clients through this vulnerable space. I continue to be a staunch advocate for this treatment and the power it holds to change and save lives.

Neuroplasticity is the brains ability to reorganize itself and form new neural connections. Understanding that the brain has this ability empowers individuals to shape their thinking patterns and emotional responses. When we understand the therapeutic process as a way to tap into the ability of the brain to change, we can see that the tools we use to help are actually working on a physical organ that can heal, much like the heart, kidneys, or even a broken bone. Give your brain some credit. Healing is possible

“Psychiatry, as an evolving solidifying guild, now too coupled with Big Pharma and compensation through the insurance industry, has rubricized and rigidified its schema step by step. Emphasizing consensuality through the DSMs to enable a replicable conceptual and compensable diagnostic framework, it has tightened its grip on how mental health practitioners think and afflicted the public’s consciousness as well. How often does one use the word “depression” mindlessly to compress feelings, or hear, “she’s bipolar” as if that expresses the essence of a person. We have become all too comfortable and accepting of diagnostic terminology as if it were real and expressive of our realities.”

Phil Wolfson

In nearly ten years of psychotherapeutic practice, I have come to know with increasing certainty that our brains are so much more capable than what the psychiatric world wants them to be. Changing the paradigm is going to be challenging, but it can be changed.

When people come to understand how the brain works they realize that their brain has capabilities that they cannot see. I have been working with an individual struggling with a variety of different anxieties. One of them is flying in airplanes. In our work together, we have discussed how the connection between the heart and the brain contribute to the anxieties, and we have used tools like heart focused breathing to prepare a foundation for relief. Most recently, before a couple of trips where he would have to take four flights, we talked about bilateral stimulation and how to use tapping to work through these anxieties. This client successfully navigated all four flights, and not only that, his perception of flying has transformed from fearful anxiety to excitement and enjoyment. Be brain focused. It can change your life. 🧠

I recently met with a client who talked about being asked to look at the sunset with her adult son. She went to look at the sunset, but rather than taking in the beauty that was around her, being in the moment, she spent the entire time validating her son for noticing the sunset, validating her son for inviting her to view it with him. Before she knew it, the time had passed and she realized that she did not take any time for personal joy and fulfillment in that moment. This was a manifestation of her codependent behavior with her son. No matter your circumstances, take the time to find the joy and gratitude in small moments for yourself. This strengthens your brain and sense of well-being.

Your brain is full of potential, meaning YOU are full of potential. Don’t stay trapped in the shield of your potential. Unleash that potential through practice, small actions that can lead to big payoffs.

The human brain is a marvelous instrument. There are many times when we do not give the brain the credit that it deserves. The brain is capable of changing on a fundamental level. We can harness the brains power to work through trauma, depression, anxiety, OCD, struggles with worth and value. Neuroplasticity and memory reconsolidation are real. No matter your struggles with your mental health and wellness, never discount the power of your brain.

“In the middle of difficulty, lies opportunity.”

Albert Einstein

Change is not always easy. Looking at ourselves is not always easy. Pain and suffering are ubiquitous parts of the human experience. Out of it though, can come growth and new understandings.

Your worth and value is inherent. Nothing about your worth and value changes based on your circumstances, the thoughts, feelings and actions of others, or your struggles. You always have worth. You always have value.

Having a sense of purpose is important; however, constantly chasing a search for identity is not the way to find that purpose. Move toward a place of radical acceptance. Accept you for you, accept the here and now. Then, from that point of acceptance, build toward your purpose.

Something simple to remember: Don’t believe everything you think. Don’t act on everything you feel.

08/22/2022

All of us have a myriad of thoughts that come into our minds everyday. It is important to remember that having a thought does not mean we need to buy into the thought. We can make choices about which thoughts we buy into, and which thoughts we choose to let go of. As we do this, our mental and emotional health can be strengthened.
