A modality in therapy is like a specific approach or style that therapists use to help you. It’s kind of like different tools in a toolbox.

Each modality has its own techniques and strategies for tackling issues like anxiety, depression, trauma, or relationship problems.

When therapists talk about modalities, they’re basically talking about the methods they use to help you feel better.

Four of the modalities we utilize at Guest House are included in the pictures above.

While there’s a wide variety of modalities therapists use (and sometimes an “eclectic” combination of all of them) all should be evidence based and utilized for your benefit.

Marc Oslund is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and founder of Guest House Therapy.

Marc is a native Angeleno who has lived in Utah County for almost 15 years.

Marc began his career as a teacher and pivoted to social work after realizing the kids he taught needed more support than he as an educator was capable of offering.

Marc earned a Master of Social Work from Indiana University, a Master of Education from Utah Valley University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Humanities from Brigham Young University.

In a past life, Marc was an All-American pitcher at BYU and spent much of his life reflecting on the psychology of sport and sport performance.

Marc loves cooking (pasta, bread, and pizza in particular), walking, riding his bike, watching sports (Laker and Dodger fan all his life), and traveling with his family of three.

His great passion in life is finding ways to create cultures of care and rapport in a variety of settings.

Therapy acronyms can be overwhelming. We’ll to keep it simple.

At Guest House, we focus on mindfulness, compassion, and connection.

Our hope is that you walk into and away from therapy feeling safe, seen, and empowered.

If you’re interested, the specific modalities we use (techniques used in psychotherapy) are below.

TLDR; we create a foundation of mindfulness to help you look at yourself and the world more objectively and more compassionately.

As for modalities, check out our post on that!

Our values drive everything we do. We hope they align with what you are looking for on your journey.

At Guest House we:

•Have a foundational belief in the inherent and unconditional goodness of every individual. This belief drives every other value we hold.

•Work to “stand in awe at what folks have to carry rather than in judgment at how they carry it.” -Greg Boyle ()

•Understand the profound need for love, connection, and belonging for human thriving.

•Believe “each of us is more than the worst thing we’ve ever done” or the worst thing that has happened to us. -Bryan Stevenson ( )

•Practice a neutral and compassionate stance towards emotions, acknowledging everything belongs as part of the human journey.

•Firmly believe in the power of hope. Change, contendedness, and peace are possible.

Do these resonate with you? If so, let’s work together!

Everyone’s least favorite topic.

The truth is that we want mental healthcare to be accessible to all, while also making sure our therapist’s needs are met.

So we priced our 50 minute session at $135—right in the middle of average rates here in Utah.

Additionally, we offer limited sliding scale fees for college-aged adults (18-26) to make sure they are supported during such a critical time of life.

We don’t currently accept insurance, but you can let us know which provider you have to see if we can begin accepting it.

We offer free consultations if you have any questions at all, so please DM us and we can chat!

A poem from the 13th century is the inspiration behind our namesake. Not only do the words give our business a name, they also serve as a beautiful encapsulation of our therapeutic approach.

**********

“The Guest House” by Rumi:

This being human is a guest house. Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness, some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all! Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows, who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture, still, treat each guest honorably. He may be clearing you out for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice, meet them at the door laughing, and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes, because each has been sent as a guide...

**********

The Guest House reminds us of the remarkable journey of being human, and challenges us to celebrate both highs and lows on the path to wholeness.

We sincerely hope that each client who shows up as a guest in our offices will be welcomed with the same sense of awe, care, and gratitude that is described in the poem.

And we hope you like the name 😉
