Congratulations to John Bush, from our Chaplaincy team, and Hunter Isaacson, from T9, for being our next L.O.V.E Award honorees.

John received a nomination from a fellow hospital caregiver who says he is always there when you need him, checking in and lending a friendly ear during tough times. He listened and helped out when this caregiver was dealing with a tricky situation involving a patient, who was high risk for falling, and a difficult family member. John went to talk to both the patient and the family, which made a big difference for the caregiver. The fact that he took the time to listen and offer help really meant a lot. Having someone like John around just makes many work situations a lot easier.

Hunter was nominated by a patient’s family member who witnessed “exceptional kindness and empathy” from him. Hunter’s genuine warmth and compassion towards the patient and others in his room made an incredibly difficult experience much more bearable. Knowing the patient was in Hunter's hands gave the family peace of mind, and his presence made a profound difference in their lives. Hunter’s unwavering support and considerate approach helped restore the patient’s sense of dignity and provided the entire family with comfort beyond what words can express.

All our caregivers are eligible for the award, which has a variety of categories. L.O.V.E stands for Living Our Values Every Day. Many thanks to John and Hunter and all our caregivers who provide extraordinary care to our patients and support their fellow team members!!

Are you on a fitness journey? If so, you may be worried about Halloween and all the candy and treats that come with it. Overindulging in Halloween candy can cause some setbacks on your journey, but trying to avoid eating any candy at all may not lead to success either!

There is a balance that can be achieved during this time of year. Here are some tips for navigating the Halloween season from Maddison Heyn, PA, an Intermountain weight management and lifestyle medicine specialist:

1- Keep candy out of sight: Often, if Halloween candy is visible and available to us, we find ourselves mindlessly reaching for it throughout the day. By keeping the Halloween candy in a location that is not easily accessible, it makes it easier not to overindulge simply because the candy is there. Out of sight, out of mind.

2- Budget for candy in your day: It's nearly impossible to avoid candy completely during Halloween. Oftentimes we intend to “be good” and not eat any candy during the season, but temptations get the better of us and we end up overindulging anyway. Try planning a small piece of candy into your calorie budget for the day. That way, you will get the satisfaction from enjoying your favorite candy while being able to resist overindulging.

3- Avoid the candy you don’t really love: Sometimes we eat candy or other treats not because we really like them, but just because they are there. This Halloween, make an effort not to indulge in the candy you don’t thoroughly enjoy. That way, you have room in your calorie budget to have a piece or two of your favorite candy.

4- Make sure you are nourishing your body: One thing that can be helpful while on a fitness journey is to try to add in healthy foods, rather than trying to eliminate ones that are less healthy. This Halloween, try to make sure you have plenty of fruits and vegetables during the day, so that you can feel good about enjoying a little bit of candy later on. It’s recommended to get 2-3 servings of fruit and 2-3 servings of vegetables every day.

Don’t get tricked this Halloween! Enjoy your treats while still being mindful of your goals. If you'd like more information about healthy lifestyles, or are looking to start a weight loss journey of your own, make an appointment with Maddison at Utah Valley Clinic, 801-373-3300.

Lauren Young, RN, from Mom/Baby, deserves big congratulations as our next L.O.V.E Award honoree.

Lauren was nominated for her exceptional empathy, humility, and dedication to patient care. From the moment she met the family, Lauren treated them and their newborn, Harper, with genuine compassion, making them feel valued and cared for. She went out of her way to ensure their comfort, addressed their concerns calmly, and supported them without judgment, even when they had issues with other staff members. Her willingness to check in on them, even when she wasn't assigned to their care, and her proactive approach to resolving problems exemplified her outstanding bedside manner.

Lauren’s supportive and patient nature encouraged the family to ask questions and learn more about caring for their baby, creating a safe and nonjudgmental environment. When the mother experienced anxiety about sending her child to the nursery due to past trauma, Lauren’s calm reassurance made it possible for her to trust that her baby would be safe. Thanks to Lauren’s care, the mother was able to get the rest she needed and continue her recovery with peace of mind.

All our caregivers are eligible for the award, which has a variety of categories, and Lauren is being honored in the Nursing category. L.O.V.E stands for Living Our Values Every Day. Many thanks to her and all our caregivers who provide extraordinary care to our patients!!

We enjoyed a morning with the students Franklin Elementary School on Friday. We read books about self image and overcoming fears with the younger children, then built towers out of index cards with the older ones. Everyone at the school welcomed us warmly and the students made us smile. What a great way to end the week!

Congratulations to Sandra Kiggins, from Inpatient Rehab, and Crystal Lamb, from T5, for being our next L.O.V.E Award honorees.

Sandra’s dedication to finding a lost item earned her an award nomination. A patient on her floor faced a distressing day when he became nauseated and lost his lower dentures, a vital and expensive possession for both his recovery and confidence. Sandra sprang into action — searching the room, calling in nurses for help, checking with dietary, and even sifting through trash, all while closely listening to the concerns of the patient and his wife. When the dentures were still missing, Sandra remembered that the housekeeper had already removed the trash, prompting her to meticulously search the dirty utility room, where she finally discovered the dentures in an emesis bag. The relief and gratitude from the patient and his wife were immense—they hugged Sandra and expressed their deep appreciation, knowing her quick thinking had saved them the cost and stress of replacement and preserved the patient’s ability to eat and interact with loved ones.

A patient nominated Crystal after being admitted without family around to help. She was admitted from the ER following a chemo treatment that “went wrong” and was really struggling — pain, nausea, feeling terrible, and being separated from her family. Crystal was so kind, warm, and caring every time she visited the patient. The patient said one day Crystal could tell she was having a hard time and took the time to listen and comfort her. It felt like talking with a friend, even though they’d just met. That extra care made all the difference. When the patient told her husband and kids about how wonderful her tech was, it put their minds at ease too. The patient felt lucky to be Crystal’s patient because she went above and beyond, even though hospitals are always busy.

All our caregivers are eligible for the award, which has a variety of categories. L.O.V.E stands for Living Our Values Every Day. Many thanks to Sandra and Crystal and all our caregivers who provide extraordinary care to our patients and support their fellow team members!!

Strokes happen for many reasons. Arterial plaque, atrial fibrillation, genetic disease, even chronic inflammation can all play a role. About 40% of patients leave the hospital without a cause identified.

At McKay-Dee's outpatient stroke clinic, APPs follow up with those patients to accomplish just that. They complete patients’ workups, order additional tests, and help patients understand what happened and how to prevent it going forward.

Happy 2025 to all the 2,100 APPs across Intermountain – for their unwavering dedication to our patients.

Heal from suicidal thoughts:

Know healing is not a linear journey. You likely will have times you relapse into hopelessness. Remember you got through it before and you’ll get through it again.

Recognize triggers and learn how to cope with them or avoid them all together.

Keep up with your provider and the interventions they recommend to you.

Myth: The flu is just a bad cold

Fact: Influenza is far more serious than a common cold. It strikes suddenly, often with fever, cough, chills, and exhaustion . "[Last season] We had about 56 million people ill in the U.S., with 770,000 hospitalized,” said Dr. Tamara Sheffield

Myth: Only kids and older adults need to worry

Fact: “Young, healthy people do get hospitalized with influenza. And they’re often the ones who spread it to grandparents, infants, or others who can’t fight it off,” said Dr. Tamara Sheffield.

Flu can affect pregnant people and their baby particularly hard. People managing conditions like asthma, diabetes, or heart disease may see their symptoms worsen dramatically if they catch influenza.

Myth: You’re only contagious when you feel sick

Fact: Here's one of influenza's trickiest features: you can spread it before you even know you're infected--passing around the infection a full day before symptoms. This "silent spread" is exactly why flu tears through schools, workplaces, and families so quickly. Your best defense is twofold: Get vaccinated to reduce your odds of catching and spreading the flu and stay home the moment you feel unwell.

Advanced Practice Providers play a big role in neonatal care at Intermountain. “We can bring neonatal expertise to smaller hospitals, preventing unnecessary transfers,” said Tyler Dunyon, NP. “This allows babies and their families to stay with their support systems.”

Happy 2025, and big thanks to these neonatal APPs – and to all the 2,100 APPs across Intermountain – for their unwavering dedication to our patients. We APPreciate you!

Expectant moms in their third trimester can get the RSV protection now and pass antibodies onto their baby—protecting them in those first few months of life from hospitalization or more serious complications from RSV.

Infants whose moms didn’t receive the shot during pregnancy, as well as at-risk toddlers, can receive RSV protection starting in October to help protect them from severe illness this winter.

Older adults also can receive RSV protection. The CDC recommends a single dose of any FDA-licensed RSV vaccine for all adults ages 75 and older and adults ages 50–74 who are at increased risk of severe RSV.

Talk to your primary care provider to see what other vaccines or immunizations are recommended for you, based on your age and medical history.
