If you think someone might be considering su***de, ask them. While it may feel counterintuitive or even uncomfortable, research shows that asking others about su***de reduces su***de risk. Try questions like:

• “Seems like something is up, wanna talk about it?”
• “I noticed you have been more withdrawn, are you doing okay?”
• “Have you had thoughts of su***de?”
• “Are you considering ending your life?”

“Asking the question does not increase the chances of someone harming themselves, it does the opposite,” said Matt Steinkamp, director of the Intermountain Employee Assistance Program (IEAP). “Someone asking the question provides the opportunity for the person to answer it. People feeling this way often feel shame or guilt for doing so or assume that no one cares or would care if they followed through with su***de. Asking the question opens up the opportunity to talk about how they are feeling. Asking the question shows you care and want to help. It can take the focus off the hopelessness the person is feeling and begin to focus on getting the support they need.”

Patients in a remote area of Fairbanks, Alaska, now have broader access to greatly needed cancer services due to a groundbreaking telehealth partnership between Intermountain Health and the Tanana Chiefs Conference (TCC).

The Telehealth Oncology collaboration brings comprehensive cancer care closer to home for Alaska Native populations across a vast and remote region. This is a group research shows, has a higher rate of cancers than non-Native Alaskans.

The TeleOncology partnership with Intermountain Health is designed to reduce travel time and expenses, allowing many patients to remain in their communities during cancer treatment and receive the best possible treatment and comprehensive cancer care.

After initial in-person oncology treatments in Fairbanks, many patients can continue follow-up care remotely, including some lab monitoring and telehealth consultations.

In an emergency, a few minutes can make all the difference. That’s why Intermountain Health teamed up with Utah’s largest school districts to teach staff the three principles of Stop The Bleed:

-Pressure
-Wound Packing
-Tourniquets

“Teaching people proper CPR for the last several decades has made a huge difference in saving lives and now Stop the Bleed training is aiming to do the same,” said Maranda Davis, RN, trauma services manager for Intermountain Utah Valley Hospital in Provo. “Providing our educators an opportunity to have a hands-on experience with tools is a key component to this training. It helps remove the hesitancy someone may have due to what they have seen in movies or on TV.”

Staff from nearly 90 schools in the Alpine School District gathered for a Stop The Bleed training course before school started, allowing them to be prepared members of the community should they be faced with an emergency situation.

Aubrey Hall, RN, from Mom/Baby, and Mackenzie Baxter, RN, from our Float Pool, deserve big congratulations as Intermountain Utah Valley Hospital's next L.O.V.E Award honorees.

Aubrey’s nomination came from a patient after a scary labor and delivery experience and an unexpected NICU stay for her baby. Being separated from her baby during her hospital stay caused this mom a lot of guilty feelings that Aubrey helped her manage. She got to know the mom on a personal level and made sure she understood all the care goals that were in place for her own recovery. “Aubrey was so full of light and made a situation that wasn’t ideal as pleasant as it could be. She helped us feel like we were capable parents and helped us feel empowered enough to take care of my health and my baby’s health when we returned home,” says the patient.

Mackenzie’s patience, compassion and understanding for an aging patient earned her a nomination from a family member. The patient continuously asked Mackenzie to perform the same task, and she always responded with love and respect. Mackenzie took time to lightly scratch the patient’s back whenever it was needed and applied as much cortisone cream as she could. “After not being able to sleep for 30 hours trying to take care of my mom, Mackenzie is an absolute angel and godsend to me. I will forever be indebted to her love and compassion,” says the family member.

All our caregivers are eligible for the award, which has a variety of categories, and Aubrey and Mackenzie are being honored in the Nursing category. L.O.V.E stands for Living Our Values Every Day. Many thanks to them and all our caregivers who provide extraordinary care to our patients!!

Meet Troy Nelson, RN — one of our house supervisors and a passionate health advocate who’s been spreading Intermountain’s mission far beyond Utah’s boundaries for almost 10 years.

Troy created Healthy Samoa in 2016, a program designed to improve diabetes awareness and prevention, the #1 non-communicable disease in Samoa. It’s now part of the study abroad program at UVU, giving future nurses a chance to put their skills into action.

Each year, Troy and the students spend a week in Samoa, screening thousands of kids and teaching healthy habits. Their work goes beyond just the children; adults get screened and educated, too, and walk away with information to take to their own physicians.

“We’re focused just on the country of Samoa right now. Our primary goal is educate children and adults to decrease the rate of diabetes. Right now, Type 2 diabetes is as high as 40 percent in some areas,” says Troy. “Samoa is becoming just like any other developing country. Unhealthy options are easy to get, healthy options are costly and they have no time to eat the rainbow, meaning a variety of healthy food.”

One special addition this year was having Utah native and NFL star Puka Nacua join the team — playing with kids, helping the students, and bringing joy to families. The LA Rams even sent photographers to document the experience! Troy’s creative approach, like writing a children’s story and puppet show in English and Samoan, helps kids learn about wellness in their own language and take those lessons home.

Thank you, Troy, for your commitment to helping the people of Samoa live the healthiest lives possible!

Our Trauma Team – led by Maranda Davis, Karie Haws and Dr. D. Millar – just wrapped up two impactful days of “Stop The Bleed” training with Alpine School District teachers and personnel. This hands-on training was coordinated for nearly 90 schools across the district.

That translates into around 3,500 more people knowing how to prevent death by bleeding in the communities in Utah County.

“Injury prevention is a team sport, and we are honored that so many people would come together for a community to help faculty in the Alpine District get certified,” says Karie, the Trauma Team’s Injury Prevention Coordinator.

Stop The Bleed is a national campaign designed to educate and prepare the public to recognize life-threatening bleeding and take action quickly with simple, effective techniques. Through a combination of instruction and practical exercises, participants learn how to apply pressure, pack wounds, and use tourniquets.

“Stopping the bleed is the number one way our communities can come together and prevent death. This is so impactful in our injury prevention efforts,” Karie adds.

These sessions in Alpine District were made possible thanks to an incredible partnership with dedicated school nurses, the district’s emergency manager, multiple local fire departments, and other healthcare organizations from throughout Utah. Our goal is simple but vital: to train as many school employees as possible so they’re prepared to save lives in an emergency.

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make our schools safer!

Trauma Medical Director Dr. D Millar and the entire Trauma Services team at Intermountain Utah Valley Hospital are seeing the results of dangerous driving along Hwy 6 in Spanish Fork Canyon.

Serious brain injuries, complex chest trauma and severe abdominal trauma are some of the conditions Dr. Millar treats when patients are transported from an accident along that stretch of highway. He and the team want to help prevent these injuries - which is why they're partnering with Utah Highway Patrol and Utah County Sheriff's Office to keep people informed about the dangers of driving in that canyon.

“It's a dangerous stretch of road where you really need to drive through there like you’re part of the team and you’re trying to protect everyone else, including yourself," said Dr. Millar.

Patient gratitude is adorning the walls of our outpatient psychology and counseling clinic in recognition of the help they’ve received for Treatment Resistant Depression (TRD). This can be a challenging condition where traditional antidepressants and therapies have not provided sufficient relief.

Some of the most promising advanced treatments for TRD are ketamine, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and spravato (esketamine). More info on these treatments can be found https://intermountainhealthcare.org/locations/utah-valley-clinic/psychiatry-counseling

Here’s what a few patients have to say about their ketamine treatments:

“My experience was amazing with each treatment I felt better and more like myself. The integration work that is done with each treatment set me up for success.”

"I had the privilege to be a patient at the ketamine clinic. I was excited when I got the call…I was filled with hope again.”

"I don't know what it was but there has been a miracle. I have attempted to deep clean my house four times in the past six years, and I was finally able to get it done. My daughter said, ‘I can't believe it's you.’"

Jon Nielsen, from Safety and Security, and Karen Lovell, from Pain Management, both deserve to be celebrated as our next L.O.V.E Award honorees.

Jon’s caring support for one of the members on his team earned him a L.O.V.E Award. This team member approached Jon about making a change to his work schedule. Instead of just responding quickly by email, Jon took the time visit with this caregiver in person and understood the reasons behind the request. He also made sure this person knew about resources that were available through Intermountain that might offer additional support. “Anytime I’m around Jon, he makes me feel like I am the most important person in the room. I am very impressed with Jon’s willingness to help others and the empathy and compassion he shows for others,” says the nomination.

Karen’s outstanding example to other patient service representatives earned her a L.O.V.E Award. She recognizes each of the regular patients at the Pain Clinic – some even wait at the front desk until she can check them in because she makes them feel important and known. She is incredibly organized and makes sure the clinic follows all policies and protocols. Karen willingly helps anyone with any problem but isn’t afraid to learn how to be better at her job. “She has made the 8th floor of the Sorenson Tower an amazing place to work, and I’ve had a great experience each time I’m there,” says her co-worker.

All our caregivers are eligible for the award, which has a variety of categories. L.O.V.E stands for Living Our Values Every Day. Many thanks to Jon and Karen and all our caregivers who provide extraordinary care to our patients and support their fellow team members!!

Debbie Belnap calls herself “the poster child for growth at Intermountain Health.” She started in an on-call catering position in 1993, then became a dietician tech, then catering coordinator and continued to advance until she reached nutrition director.

“My boss used to say this is my girl who said she’d give me six months,” recalls, Debbie who retired last week from Intermountain Utah Valley Hospital with more than 30 years of service.

Debbie remembers when patients didn’t get to choose what they wanted to eat. As a diet tech, she just made sure the assigned menu fit into the person’s dietary guidelines. Over her career, she watched as the nutrition program morphed into something amazing, where even the sickest people get some choice in what they eat.

“It’s been amazing to watch the progression. Intermountain has been progressive and realized food is medicine; food contributes to patient’s health. It’s harder, but it’s what’s right and good,” says Debbie.

What’s also good are the many delicious – and beautiful – dishes Debbie and the hospital's Catering team created over the years. From groundbreaking events to ribbon cutting ceremonies to governing board dinners and everything in between, they’ve supported it all with flare and finesse!

“It brought out my creativity – I didn’t have much of that before I came to Intermountain. I learned from Mike [Austin] and tried my best to continue his work to elevate catering as much as we’re able,” says Debbie.

As Debbie sets off to enjoy new adventures — like road-tripping to the Ryder Cup, golfing, pottery, and spending time with family —we wish her every joy this next chapter can offer. Congratulations, Debbie! Your Intermountain family will miss you.

Layna Despain, from Central Processing, and Brent Mills, from Imaging both deserve to be celebrated as our next L.O.V.E Award honorees.

Layna has constantly strived for greatness throughout her 40 years with Intermountain. Her coworker who nominated her says she accomplishes every task with grace and excellence. In fact, her actions cause others to want to be just as diligent, knowledgeable, and kind. Layna always seeks the best for patients and her fellow caregivers. She never shy's away from speaking up for what is right in a clinical and social setting - regardless of how difficult the conversation or hurdle may be. “The positive energy Layna brings to each of her shifts is highly contagious and well-needed,” says her coworker.

Brent’s ability to make a patient feel valued and heard earned him a nomination. He patiently explained everything involved in the patient’s HIDA scan and made her feel comfortable throughout the entire procedure. Brent knew the patient would be starving at the end because she had to fast for this procedure and it was already late in the afternoon. So, he gave her a food coupon for the cafeteria. “He treated me as a person not just another patient. This really helps alleviate some fears of the hospital. I left the procedure with a positive feeling,” says the patient.

All our caregivers are eligible for the award, which has a variety of categories. L.O.V.E stands for Living Our Values Every Day. Many thanks to Layna and Brent and all our caregivers who provide extraordinary care to our patients!
