Keep Puako Beautiful

Keep Puako Beautiful A community group dedicated to beach and trail cleanups for Keep Hawaii Beautiful and Get The Drift Int'l Coastal Cleanup).

Who are we:
Site coordinator for Ocean Environment and Education. community stewardship, beach and trail cleanups and educational kiosks components for Keep Puako Beautiful and South Kohala Reef Alliance, Get the Drift & Bag It (a.k.a. We collect and document data on litter, marine debris. We recycle cigarette litter, beverage containers, net gear, fishing line and what we can. Where we work:
Our sites are along the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail Corridor in North Kohala, South Kohala and Hawaii Island. Why cleanups?:
We developed the Ocean Environment and Education Station (OEES) program in 2013 to provide the public access to our marine environment partners and conservation groups through educational brochures, beach cleanups supplies and our QR Code Directory and Resource Guide. How it works:
OEES beach cleanup supplies encourage users to clean up the area TODAY. In 2013, Keep Puako Beautiful and the OEES Youth Coordinator developed speed-cleanups (with a goal to remove 3 pounds of trash in 15 minutes!)

Our Mission:
We believe our Hawai'i cleanups give volunteers the opportunity to engage in meaningful activities that help to maintain a higher quality of marine life and human health. We are giving volunteers the tools to practice good stewardship. Our Partners:
Conservation groups like Hawaii Wildlife Fund, South Kohala Reef Alliance, NOAA Marine Debris Program, and Get The Drift & Bag It give us a model to follow. We like working with local schools, e.g., Hawaii Preparatory Academy, Waimea Country School, University of Hawaii, and Waimea Middle School. Hawaii State Parks, Hawai'i Island NPS, DOCARE, DOBOR and DEM are some of the government agencies that make our cleanups possible. Team Leaders include: Keep The Ialand of Hawaii Visitors Bureau, Jeff Fear & Waveriders Against Drugs, Kelly & Sam , Annie Mendoza, Grainger Ohana, 2 Papayas LLC, Hulakai, West Hawaii Acupuncture, Blue Wilderness Dive Adventures, Hawaii Surf and Kayak, Surfrider Foundation, Coalition for a Smoke Free Hawaii, KPB 'Ohana and Friends.
