Thank you for believing in our ministry of serving the families of Pueblo!
**************************
Fifty years ago today, May 22, 1976, I walked through the front doors of what was known then as “The Rouch Funeral Home” and began my career in funeral service. I first started as a part-time employee while attending the University of Southern Colorado. During this time, I was able to complete my apprentice Mortuary Science Practitioner requirements. I then attended and graduated with honors from the Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science. At the college, I served as the “Scribe” (Secretary) of the Pi Sigma Eta National Morticians Fraternity. Before graduation, I took and passed the test given by International Conference of Funeral Service Examining Boards. Upon returning to Pueblo, I was fortunate enough to be able to return to the funeral home, as well as obtain my license as a Colorado Mortuary Science Practitioner.
When Orville Rouch decided to retire, he offered Marvin Steward and myself the opportunity to purchase the funeral home.
On December 28, 1986, we finalized the purchase and embarked on a mission to provide the most respected and best possible service offered in our area, as well as support our community through philanthropic missions to the arts and other community events. The Rouch name was slowly phased out and was renamed Montgomery & Steward Funeral Directors.
Our first goal was to remodel the funeral home, but keep the integrity of the architecture, add state-of-the-art audio/visual equipment, install a crematorium, and update the fleet of cars.
Our most positive change to the business was in 1996 when Dian Gassino (now Montgomery) came into the picture and joined us! She has helped in so many unbelievable ways. She not only worked among us, but has been so supportive and became a working partner/owner of the business!
Special recognition to my parents, Tom and Midge Montgomery, who taught me ethical values and supported me in my career choice. Also, to my in-laws, Bill and Ines Gassino, who were also very supportive through the years. Although my father and in-laws are no longer with us, their morals are still with me.
Through our mission, families began to recognize our services and helped us become the largest, independent funeral home in Southern Colorado.
This year also marks the 104th year for the funeral home. I would like to thank the many friends we have made through these many years that have believed in us and have entrusted us to take care of their loved one(s).
