This is a time to raise awareness and remind families of steps that support healthy pregnancies.

Key prevention strategies include taking 400 mcg of folic acid daily, avoiding alcohol and to***co, managing chronic conditions with the help of your provider, and staying up to date on recommended vaccines.

While not all birth defects are preventable, early prenatal care and healthy habits can make a difference.

Planning a pregnancy?

It’s a good idea to consult with your OB/GYN ahead of time to review vitamins, medications, health conditions, and other important pre-pregnancy considerations.

Is screen time bad?

Screens are part of modern life, but toddlers still learn best through hands-on play, movement, and interaction with caregivers.

The AAP recommends no more than 1 hour of high-quality screen time per day for children 2–5, and ideally with a parent watching to help them understand what they’re seeing. I recommend consuming screentime together rather than on small screens. The back and forth interaction is important.

Try to avoid screens during meals, 1.5 hours before bedtime, or when your child is upset because these habits can make sleep and emotional regulation harder.

If you’re unsure whether your child’s screen habits are impacting sleep, behavior, or speech, call our office. We're happy to help create a plan that works for your family.

If it feels like your toddler catches everything, you’re not imagining it.

Little immune systems are still learning, and toddlers are great at sharing germs especially in daycare or group settings. It’s normal for young children to have 10–14 viral illnesses a year, lasting 10 to 14 days. If you do the math this can feel like they are constantly sick, especially during fall and winter.

Colds can also seem “back-to-back” because viruses stack or symptoms overlap.

The good news? Each illness strengthens their immune system, and most are short-lived and resolve with rest, fluids, and time.

If your child’s illnesses seem unusually severe, frequent, or they’re not bouncing back as expected, call our office so we can help determine what’s normal and what deserves a closer look.

Red cheeks? It could be Fifth disease.

Fifth disease usually begins with a bright red “slapped-cheek” rash followed later by a lacy rash on the arms and body.

It’s caused by parvovirus B19 and spreads through respiratory droplets so kids typically catch it the same way they catch a cold.

Most people only get Fifth disease once in their lifetime because they develop immunity afterward. One important note: children are usually contagious 2–3 weeks before the rash appears, which means by the time you see the rash, they’re no longer spreading the virus.

If your child develops the rash, notify any pregnant person they may have been around during the contagious period, since additional precautions may be advised. Fifth disease can be harmful to the unborn fetus in a mom who is not immune to Fifth disease.

Call our office if your child has a fever lasting more than a few days or if you have questions about exposure during pregnancy.

RSV can cause serious illness in infants, especially those under 6 months. This season, families have extra protection available with the RSV immunization.

Babies can receive the RSV monoclonal antibody (nirsevimab), which helps reduce the risk of severe disease. Pregnant mothers may also receive a maternal RSV vaccine, which protects the baby after birth.

These RSV antibodies work much like the natural antibodies a mother passes to her baby during pregnancy offering protection before your baby’s own immune system is mature enough to fight infections on its own.

If you have questions about eligibility or scheduling RSV protection for your newborn or for you if you are expecting, call our office and we’ll walk you through the guidelines.

Winter blues?

Shorter winter days can affect kids’ (and adults’) mood and energy levels, and a little grumpiness or lower motivation this time of year is normal. But parents should watch for red flags like withdrawal, sudden school struggles, big changes in sleep or appetite, or any mention of hopelessness.

If something feels “off,” trust your instincts.

Reach out to us because we’re here to help support your child’s emotional health.

Flu season is here.

Kids often show symptoms like fever, body aches, cough, sore throat, and sometimes vomiting or diarrhea. Most cases can be managed at home with rest and fluids, but call our office if your child is working hard to breathe, isn’t drinking well, or isn’t improving after a few days. I recommend seeing us within the first 72 hours if you suspect flu as Tamiflu might be a safe and effective treatment to decrease sick days as well as decrease infectivity.

Fun fact: kids are actually more likely than adults to spread the flu because they shed the virus longer.

Flu vaccines are still available and still one of the simplest ways to protect your family. Call today if your child still needs theirs.

Is your baby bundled too much? Or not enough?

During winter, infants should typically sleep in one more layer than an adult would wear to be comfortable in the same room. A breathable onesie plus a sleep sack is usually perfect.

Avoid hats, blankets, and loose bedding in the crib to prevent overheating and reduce SIDS risk. If your baby’s chest feels warm and dry, they’re dressed appropriately. Remember, cold hands and feet are normal.

Not sure if your baby is dressed appropriately for sleep? Give us a call, we’re here to help you keep them safe and cozy.

Cold air can trigger asthma symptoms by irritating airways.

Using scarves over the mouth, following action plans, and pre-treatment when advised can help reduce flares.

If your child is needing to use their rescue inhaler more, has a nighttime cough, or shortness of breath with low impact activities, they need to be seen by a provider. I generally recommend being seen if you are needing your inhaler more than three times a day or more than 3 days in a row.

Review your child’s asthma plan this season and call our office to ensure they are up to date on their asthma medication follow up.

Baby it is cold outside.

Cold winter air can make kids’ skin dry and itchy, and thicker creams usually work better than lotions because they seal in moisture longer.

Apply moisturizer right after baths, choose fragrance-free products, and keep soaps gentle on sensitive skin.

Our providers love products such as Cerave Healing Ointment, Eucerin Cream, and Aquaphor for dry skin.

If you notice cracking, worsening eczema, or rashes that don’t improve within a few days, give us a call. We’re happy to help with next steps.

When the weather keeps your family inside, it’s the perfect time to build connections in simple ways.

Try reading together under a warm blanket, cooking or baking a new recipe, creating an indoor scavenger hunt, snuggling up on the couch with a warm cup of hot chocolate or enjoying a favorite board game.

These small moments feel cozy but also build skills like communication, problem-solving, and patience.

What’s your favorite cold-weather family activity?
