Cow’s milk protein allergy occurs when a baby’s immune system reacts negatively to proteins in cow’s milk.

Symptoms can include vomiting, diarrhea, rash, or fussiness after feeding, and is associated with blood in the stool without signs of infection. Both breastfed and formula-fed babies can experience this allergy, so it’s important to monitor symptoms regardless of feeding method. While some babies outgrow it, others may need ongoing formula changes or breastfeeding modifications.

We follow evidence-based guidelines to identify symptoms, confirm diagnosis, and create a safe feeding plan for your baby.

If your baby shows signs of a possible allergy, send us a portal message to schedule an evaluation and discuss feeding options.

Did you know that up to 10–20% of children in the U.S. witness abuse of a parent or caregiver each year?

This exposure can profoundly impact a child’s emotional, behavioral, and physical well-being, increasing risks for anxiety, school difficulties, and long-term health issues.

Children aren’t always directly involved, but hearing or sensing conflict at home still affects them deeply.

Your providers at Steel City Pediatrics can support you and your family by offering emotional health screenings, expert guidance, and connection to counseling or social services. If your home doesn’t feel safe or you’re concerned about your child’s well-being, reach out to us, we’re here to help guide and support your family.

Meningitis is an inflammation of the protective layers around the brain and spinal cord. It can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or fungi. While bacterial meningitis is the most urgent and requires immediate treatment, fungal meningitis can also be very serious, though it is much less common in children.

Symptoms may include sudden fever, severe headache, stiff neck, sensitivity to light, or a purple rash.

The best prevention? Vaccines. Hib, meningococcal, and pneumococcal vaccines have significantly reduced bacterial meningitis rates in the U.S., making early protection especially important.

If your child develops sudden symptoms that concern you, call us or seek emergency care right away.

Safe sleep saves lives. Every nap and bedtime should follow these guidelines:

- Back to sleep: Always place your baby on their back.

- Bare crib: Use a firm mattress with a fitted sheet—no pillows, blankets, or stuffed animals.

- Room share, don’t bed share: Keep the baby in your room but in their own sleep space for at least 6 months, but the best practice is until 12 months.

- Avoid overheating: Dress baby in a sleep sack instead of loose blankets.

Provider tip: Dr. Simony recommends checking the safe sleep approval on all products prior to purchasing. For example, weighted sleep sacks are not approved for safe sleep so should be avoided. Check out this saferproducts.com to check products.

Have questions about your baby’s sleep setup? Bring a photo to your next visit so we can help make sure it’s safe.

Handwashing is one of the simplest - and most powerful - ways to stop germs in their tracks.

Teach your child to:
- Wash for at least 20 seconds (singing “Happy Birthday” twice works!)
- Scrub front, back, between fingers, and under fingernails
- Dry hands completely
- Wash before eating, after using the bathroom, and after coughing/sneezing

Make handwashing part of your child’s daily routine - ask us for tips at your next visit if it’s a struggle at home.

Sleep training can be helpful for some families, but it’s not a one-size-fits-all approach and not every baby is ready at the same time.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) supports sleep training as a safe and effective method for improving infant sleep when done appropriately and developmentally. The AAP recognizes behavioral sleep training techniques like graduated extinction (letting the baby cry for gradually longer intervals before responding) and bedtime fading (adjusting bedtime to match natural sleepiness) as safe and effective for infants over 6 months.

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to let your baby "cry it out" if that doesn’t feel right for your family. Remember, sleep challenges are common during the baby phase.

We’re always here to talk through different options, whether gentle, gradual, or more structured so you can find a path to better sleep that works for your baby and your family’s needs.

Iron is essential for brain development, and toddlers are particularly vulnerable to iron deficiency due to their rapid growth, especially around age one when their iron stores from birth begin to deplete.

Signs of iron deficiency can include low energy or fatigue, pale skin, brittle nails, poor appetite, picky eating, or frequent infections.

You can help boost iron levels with foods like beef, spinach, beans, and iron-fortified cereals, and pairing them with vitamin C-rich foods like oranges improves absorption.

At your toddler’s 1-year checkup, we typically screen for iron levels with a quick finger prick. If your child is at risk or shows signs of deficiency, we’ll guide you through safe supplementation and dietary adjustments to get them back on track.

Don’t forget to call our office today to schedule your child’s next wellness visit.

Did you know a baby's fingernails grow surprisingly fast? Even faster than an adult fingernail!

To prevent your little one from scratching their face, try trimming nails after a warm bath when they’re soft, using a file. Mittens can be helpful, but should be removed during awake time so babies can explore with their hands.

Some parents find it easiest to trim while their baby is sleeping or feeding to reduce wiggling. If scratching has already started, regular skin care can help healing such as applying a cream or ointment moisturizer.

Need help choosing safe trimming tools or managing those tiny scratches? Call to chat with one of our phone nurses today!

Provider tip: Dr. Simony recommends using the long sleeve onesies that have hand flaps in the early stages after bringing your baby home instead of mittens or socks. Mittens and socks fall off easily, but the onesie with the hand flap stays put.
