🐜Ants! Ants! But not in my pants!
Thank goodness!
Ants in your garden can be an indicator of a pest issue.
Pests like aphids feed on plants and produce a product called honeydew. Ants feed on the honeydew and will protect the aphids who produce it.
That means good bugs will struggle to keep aphids in check. However, if you keep up using no pesticides in your garden (even organic options), it might take a couple of seasons, but soon you will have a balanced ecosystem.
In a balanced ecosystem, an outbreak of a bad bug will be quickly remedied by the good bugs.
It is important to remember, a healthy garden and ecosystem has good and bad bugs, it's just balanced.
However, in the greenhouse we did need to put down ant traps because we can't wait for the system to balance out. The good bugs should be here today and will quickly control any bad bugs that might be here.
The presence of ants does not necessarily indicate a problem bug is present, but does mean you need to look for them. We checked and have not seen any yet and hopefully the lacewings will do their job and we won't see any at all.
