Each year, the Bailey family honors the memory of their son, Jake, through a generous LEGO donation to our pediatric patients. These LEGO sets bring comfort, distraction, and moments of joy to children and families during what can be a very difficult time. We’ve seen firsthand how something so simple can make a meaningful difference for patients who are admitted or transferring to another facility. We are deeply grateful to the Bailey family for continuing this tradition and for thinking of our patients year after year. Their kindness and generosity continue to leave a lasting impact throughout our hospital. On behalf of Pullman Regional Hospital, thank you Bailey family!

As the year comes to a close, it's out with the old and in with the new. New beds, gurneys, stretchers, armchairs, and side tables, to be exact.
Pullman Regional Hospital is ready to "roll out" brand new and updated furniture to support our inpatient services in the Emergency Department, ICU, Med Surg, Same Day Surgery, and BirthPlace. Verna Yockey, Director of Med Surg and ICU, shares her excitement for how the new beds will help patients and staff feel more comfortable, reduce injury and infection, and increase accessibility. "Comfort is paramount in patient care;" she says, "the hospital can already be uncomfortable for patients, so if you get them furniture that is comfortable, that's something helpful."
The new furniture will help lower infection rates and prevent fewer bed sores and wounds for ICU patients as the new mattresses were made with skin care in mind. Additionally, the new beds come equipped with louder, more sensitive bed alarms, so staff can attend to patients quickly and efficiently. Staff will now be able to utilize the assisted driving function on new beds to get patients to the right place swiftly and safely, especially as we're in the midst of our Patient Care Expansion. All new beds (except for those used for labor and delivery) come with integrated scales in compliance with our Stroke Ready Certification and can lower to 13 inches off the ground.
Our goal for 2026 (and every year) is to continue providing the highest quality of care and comfort to the Palouse. New beds may seem like a small change towards achieving that goal, but they already are a big help for both patients and staff.

Kinsey Dewan, a Registered Nurse at Pullman Regional Hospital's BirthPlace, was recently honored with a DAISY Award!

Kinsey joined Pullman Regional as a Certified Nursing Assistant in 2020 inspired by her sister, an occupational therapist. A job shadow experience in the hospital's BirthPlace sparked an immediate love for maternity and newborn care, and now Kinsey has spent five years making memories with BirthPlace families.

Kinsey's award is from a grateful patient who expressed her gratitude for Kinsey's kindness and competence throughout the birth of her second child. "Not only was Kinsey so incredibly confident and knowledgeable, she was so compassionate and made us feel so welcome," wrote the patient.

When the baby had breathing complications, Kinsey was a grounding, reassuring presence. Her patient also wrote "I am so thankful for the care that I, my husband, and baby boy received from Kinsey during our stay at the hospital. I can't thank her enough for being there for us during the tears, scary times, and then the happy moments at the end of our stay."

"I work with the best people," says Kinsey. "We have such a broad range of skills - every day is a different day, and I love that I get to be a part of a patient's experience through every phase of care."

Kinsey remarks that she’s part of a special team at Pullman Regional and is grateful to Sarah Garibaldo, Hannah Hartz and Izzie Roepke, her nurse mentors and thankful to work for an organization that fosters growth and supports employees throughout the process of advancing from a CNA to Registered Nurse.

The DAISY Award is part of an international recognition program celebrating nurses who go above and beyond to provide compassionate, skillful care. To learn more about the DAISY Award, or to nominate a nurse at Pullman Regional Hospital, please visit https://bit.ly/4pYx36U.

At Pullman Regional, safety is paramount for both patients and staff. A high-intensity scenario should be treated with care and urgency, and we implemented a new tool to help us achieve that: the Code Gray Time Out.

A Code Gray Time Out is used in a Code Gray incident (an individual exhibiting escalating and unsafe behavior) to assess the situation and plan a safe response. “It allows the distressed individual a brief pause to calm down and cooperate with staff,” says Stephanie Knewbow, Registered Nurse and Director for Pullman Regional’s Emergency Department. “It’s used by numerous healthcare facilities nationally and is proven to be effective in aggression de-escalation.”

The skilled professionals of the Code Gray Team comprehensively evaluate the individual’s behavior and lead de-escalation efforts such as maintaining a safe distance, speaking in a calm tone, and removing environmental triggers to reduce agitation. The team also ensures the safety of other patients, visitors, and staff by clearing the area if necessary. A debriefing session is conducted afterwards to evaluate the response and update protocols as needed.

We want patients, staff, and visitors to recognize Pullman Regional as a secure, judgment-free environment for exceptional healthcare. The Code Gray Time Out response is one of many protocols implemented to keep our community safe. To learn more about our safety practices, please visit https://bit.ly/3Ku2mr7.
