If I'd only known earlier today - it was cooold with the wind!
When we’re exposed to cold temperatures, our body starts to clamp off peripheral blood flow to keep our core warm, but if we eat an orange before skiing or going out for a winter walk, our risk of frostbite may go down. The citrus phytonutrient hesperetin helps increase blood flow.
Of course, having warm hands is nice, but maintaining blood flow to our fingers is not as important as maintaining blood flow to our brain. Out of all the different types of fruits investigated in observational studies, citrus has been found to potentially cut our risk of stroke the most.
Eating citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruits may help us during the chilly winter months, offering immediate benefits, and may also help reduce our stroke risk over the longer term.
Please note: If you are on any medications, please inform your physician if you eat grapefruit. It can suppress the enzymes that help clear more than half of commonly prescribed drugs, and less drug clearance means higher drug levels in the body.
