All the doctors out there are cringing, but icing your injury isn't helping you heal faster.

It actually just masks the pain and slows down your body's recovery. The worst part is it keeps you stuck in the same cycle of training and injuring yourself.

"But these aren't the typical back exercises" and you could be right.

As a physical therapist, I look for the REAL reason your back is hurting. Two exercises target your legs and core, because when you're shoveling or lifting heavy, your back takes the load from weak legs and core.

Safe to say, we make the other muscles stronger so your back doesn't have to do all the work.

Obviously your back won't be magically fixed with only these exercises. But if you're not ready to invest in full personalized physical therapy yet, these are my recommendations.

Connecticut winter activities ranked by how much they'll wreck your back:

1. Shoveling the driveway (again)
2. Slipping on ice in the Stop & Shop parking lot
3. Scraping your windshield like you're mining for gold
4. Carrying 47 grocery bags because you're NOT making two trips in this cold

But hey, at least shoveling counts as a workout... right? Who else is dealing with winter back pain right now?

Your post workout pain isn't normal, and no it's not just soreness.

There's several reasons why pain happens, but it shouldn't be causing you to stop living your life like normal.

You've "treated" your pain, but it still comes back after every workout. Ask yourself whether the pain is worth avoiding true recovery...
