Scientists at Tarleton State University just dropped some game-changing news. 🌎

Okra, fenugreek, tamarind, and cactus—these humble plants—can remove up to 90% of microplastics from water. 🧪✨

How? Their natural mucilage acts as a non-toxic, eco-friendly coagulant—clumping microplastics together for easy removal.
Unlike synthetic chemicals, this method is safe for people and the planet.

Led by Dr. Rajani Srinivasan, this breakthrough could revolutionize wastewater treatment—especially in places lacking expensive technology.

Turns out, the future of clean water might be growing in your backyard.

Scientists are debating whether concepts such as memory, consciousness, and communication can be applied beyond the animal kingdom, Zoë Schlanger wrote in our June 2024 issue.

“Consciousness was once seen as belonging solely to humans and a short list of nonhuman animals that clearly act with intention,” Schlanger wrote in an article adapted from her book, “The Light Eaters: How the Unseen World of Plant Intelligence Offers a New Understanding of Life on Earth.” https://theatln.tc/vBeRw3PB

“Yet seemingly everywhere researchers look, they are finding that there is more to the inner lives of animals than we ever thought possible. Scientists now talk regularly about animal cognition; they study the behaviors of individual animals, and occasionally ascribe personalities to them. Some scientists now posit that plants should likewise be considered intelligent.”

“Not so long ago, treading even lightly in this domain could upend a scientist’s career,” Schlanger continued. The popular 1973 book “The Secret Life of Plants” included real science, but also featured wildly unscientific projection; many scientists were unable to reproduce its claims, Schlanger wrote, causing a decades-long avoidance of plant-behavior studies.

A decade later, a paper by David Rhoades, a zoologist and chemist at the University of Washington, proposed that trees were communicating with one another to defend against a caterpillar infestation. Rhoades was ridiculed by peers; his discovery ended up buried, even as it opened new lines of inquiry.
“Four decades on, the idea that plants might communicate intentionally with one another remains a controversial concept in botany,” Schlanger wrote. Definitions of communication are slippery; intentionality is even harder to show.

The essential question of plant intelligence is “How does something without a brain coordinate a response to stimuli?” Schlanger continued. “How does information about the world get translated into action that benefits the plant? How can the plant sense its world without a centralized place to parse that information?” To learn more, she spoke with scientists studying plant agency, memory, and other avenues of research.

Destany "Sky" Pete, a high school student from the Shoshone and Paiute Tribes, made a groundbreaking discovery at the 2017 Elko County Science Fair by scientifically proving the cancer-fighting properties of a traditional Native American recipe, chokecherry pudding. Sky noticed her tribe’s health issues were linked to a lack of traditional foods, including toishabui, or chokecherry pudding.

With the help of Dr. Ken Cornell, a biochemistry professor, Sky tested various chokecherry samples on uterine sarcoma cancer cells. Remarkably, the traditional chokecherry pudding, made with crushed chokecherry pits, successfully inhibited cancer cell growth, causing the cells to die within 24 hours.
Sky’s discovery earned her the First Grand Prize at the science fair, beating over 440 projects. She believes modern health problems, like diabetes, are due to the loss of traditional foods. Sky plans to further investigate the pudding’s effects on other types of cancer cells and continues to explore the medicinal value of ancestral remedies, offering hope for natural cancer treatment and traditional medicine.

This is My Medicine

I’ll always miss being a part of development here in the islands, but now I am called to truly focus on my purpose for this lifetime & assist with the transition of both my loved ones and any other individual that would be in need of my service. Every business that I have created within the past decade has had the same mission: To assist others with healing through emotional expression.

As a visual & performance artist (Ī’ōlānī), I’ve developed methods to encourage energetic movement through the body by alignment of the mind, body, spirit sync. As well as encouraging others to express their true nature & reach their highest potential through creative musing.

My digital marketing business Day Ops Maui LLC has been a huge part of some major business transitions for the generation of traditional brick & mortar establishments here in the islands & abroad to grow their online & social media presence. Healing old practices & mindset patterns to assist with business expansion, while also creating an authentic & playful experience to showcase the true face of each business & its leaders.

While my latest business venture, The Lion’s Den Maui has been another personal project that I hoped to assist with my own healing from a very difficult & painful marriage. I wanted to help myself move on & recover from the emotional overwhelm by separating myself from the material objects that held much nostalgic attachment, yet were no longer serving my highest-self. Beautiful art, leather goods, jewelry, pieces collected from travel, anniversaries, birthdays, family celebrations…
