“Our greatest glory consists not in never falling, but in rising up every time we fall.”-Oliver Goldsmith
At NWIH, we do not shy away from undertaking the challenging task of treating opioid addiction. Our staff never fails to seize any opportunity to make a positive impact in our patients’ lives and work towards the overall welfare of our community. There are numerous success stories that reflect the immense hard work and diligence of the entire NWIH family.
One such story is of a patient at our Tacoma Westgate location. An unemployed, homeless male in his 50s who had a history of an opioid dependency and severe mental health disorders. Prior coming to the NWIH Westgate clinic, he had been in and out of prison with a history of 48 ER visits and 4 overdose incidents.
His journey to success was not a straightforward path. It required countless re-engagements that were a result of mutual understanding between him and his provider. The patient did not suffer from relapses after being prescribed Suboxone and initiating substance use disorder counseling and mental health services. However, life was still quite rough for him. The patient continued taking m**h to stay alert and keep himself warm during the cold winter nights.
At this point the patient needed inpatient services for severe addiction. After all the assiduous efforts of his SUD counselor, Jessica Pendergast, he was able to get ad-mitted to Pioneer Health. Even when the patient was there, our provider, Thanh Nguyen and recovery coach, Reginald Blackman worked together to help him find a home so upon his discharge from Pioneer he does not go back on the streets.
Now this patient has 60 days of sobriety and is stable on his current medication.
This patient’s success story is attributed to the hard work of the entire Westgate team especially, Reginald Blackman, Jessica Pendergast, and Thanh Nguyen. We could not be more proud of them.
Thank you to our entire NWIH family for helping our community, one patient at a time.
