What Is Dry Eye? Understanding the Real Causes (and Why Watering Eyes Are Often a Sign!)

Dry Eye Disease is one of the most common—but most misunderstood—eye conditions. Many people assume they can’t have dry eyes because their eyes are constantly watering.
But here’s the surprising truth:
Watering eyes are often a sign of dry eye.
When the surface of the eye becomes irritated or poorly lubricated, the eye sends a signal for more tears. The problem?
Those “emergency tears” are different from the healthy, protective tears your eyes need every day.

Let’s break it down.
Your Tears: Not All Tears Are Created Equal
Healthy tears have three layers:
1. Oil Layer (from the Meibomian glands) – keeps tears from evaporating
2. Water Layer – hydrates the eye
3. Mucus Layer – helps tears spread evenly
When these layers aren’t balanced, the eye surface becomes dry—even if it feels watery.
 
The Hidden Culprit: Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)
One of the biggest causes of dry eye is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).
What is MGD?
The Meibomian glands along your eyelids are responsible for producing the oily layer of your tears.
When these glands become clogged, inflamed, or stop functioning well:
* Tears evaporate too quickly
* The eye becomes irritated
* The body overreacts by producing watery, low-quality tears
This is why you might experience:
* Burning
* Grittiness
* Blurry vision
* Light sensitivity
* Excessive tearing
* Contact lens discomfort
MGD accounts for up to 86% of dry eye cases, which is why diagnosing and treating it correctly is so important.

I enjoy each area for different reasons. I love the fast pace of clinic and helping work patients up for their exams. I also appreciate the more focused dry eye visits, where I can spend extra time with patients and really dive into the disease process. I’m newer to special testing and continue learning more every day about glaucoma.

What is your favorite part about working for East Main Vision Clinic?
I love our culture. We genuinely care about our patients and are given the time to really listen to their concerns. We’re different from many other offices because we don’t rush through exams—we focus on providing thoughtful, personalized care. I feel so fortunate to work alongside Dr. Day and to give each patient the attention they deserve. Our patients truly feel like family.

I married my high school sweetheart, and this year we’re celebrating 19 years together and 10 years of marriage! If we’re not at home playing games or exploring our neighborhood with our 7-year-old daughter, you’ll likely find us on the sidelines of a football game watching her cheer. We have three crazy cats and are adding a puppy to the mix later this year—we love the chaos 😊

Celebration Day! 🎉 19 Years!
Every year, Dr. Day sets aside a special day to celebrate another amazing milestone at EMVC—and this year was no exception. From lots of laughs during our Scrub Daddy Toss competition, to fun rounds of Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza, and a delicious lunch at Copper & Salt, it was a day full of great memories.
