Happy Nurses Week! We're honored to celebrate Rosie Apalisok, RN whose dedication and compassionate care make a profound difference in the lives of patients and families every day.

"When I was 18 we took a family trip to the Philippines for a family reunion. During this trip our family ran a free children's clinic under the direction of my amazing aunt, who is also an RN! Watching her orchestrate this amazing clinic to help hundreds of children that do not have ready access to medical care was an inspiration to me and made me realize that I wanted to be a nurse! As soon as we returned to the states I signed up for a class to earn my CNA license and this got my healthcare career started and I have never looked back!"

Nurses are the heart of healthcare, providing expert clinical care while offering comfort, advocacy, and support during some of life's most vulnerable moments. Thank you, Rosie, for your dedication, compassion, and the exceptional care you bring to our patients every day. We're grateful to have you on our team!

Here's an empowering fact for Stroke Awareness Month: up to 80% of strokes may be preventable.

That means most strokes don't just happen by chance. They're often the result of manageable risk factors like high blood pressure, AFib, diabetes, smoking, obesity, and high cholesterol. When you address these risk factors, you significantly reduce your stroke risk.

Prevention starts with knowing your numbers. Regular checkups help you monitor blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels. From there, lifestyle changes like eating a balanced diet, staying physically active, limiting alcohol, and quitting smoking can dramatically lower your risk.

Don't leave your brain health to chance. Take control of the risk factors you can change.

Happy Nurses Week! We're honored to celebrate Dianna Holweger, RN whose dedication and compassionate care make a profound difference in the lives of patients and families every day.

"The most rewarding part of being a nurse for me is experiencing a reciprocal trust, care, and friendship-like connection that touches a person's heart. While working as a Heart Failure Nurse, yes -- I've attended to physical needs, communicated vital teaching moments and provided instructions. However, caring for each patient's thoughts, fears, hopes, and worries is where I experience the most fulfillment in serving others; those periods are likely how I do the most spiritual good. As a mother, wife, and grandma, I can say nursing often aligns with the same intention: "to care for" others and extend the spiritual gifts the Lord Jesus gave me, as I share and express my purpose for living."

Nurses are the heart of healthcare, providing expert clinical care while offering comfort, advocacy, and support during some of life's most vulnerable moments. Thank you, Dianna, for your dedication, compassion, and the exceptional care you bring to our patients every day. We're grateful to have you on our team!

What an incredible night at T-Mobile Park! Our Virginia Mason Franciscan Health nurses were honored at Nurse Appreciation Night with the Seattle Mariners.

Our nurses lined the field to create a player tunnel as the Mariners entered the field, and ICU nurse Lori Cloud threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Fans throughout the stadium stopped by our booth to write thank you messages to nurses, expressing their gratitude for the compassionate care nurses provide every day.

Tonight was a beautiful reminder of the impact nurses make in our community and the deep appreciation we all have for their dedication, skill, and heart.

Thank you to the Seattle Mariners for honoring our nurses and to all the fans who took time to say thank you. And most importantly, thank you to our incredible nurses for everything you do!

Walking with purpose to end pancreatic cancer! Our Virginia Mason Franciscan Health oncology team joined PanCAN PurpleStride and became the highest fundraising team at the event.

Dr. Picozzi took the stage to address attendees, emphasizing the critical importance of early detection in fighting pancreatic cancer. Early diagnosis dramatically improves treatment options and outcomes, making awareness and screening essential.

We're incredibly proud of our oncology team for their dedication to this cause, both in their daily work caring for patients and in their commitment to raising funds for pancreatic cancer research and awareness.

Thank you to everyone who walked, donated, and supported this vital mission. Together, we're making a difference in the fight against pancreatic cancer.

"I was sick and tired of being sick and tired." Chris Browning carried that thought for years as his weight climbed to 368 pounds, bringing Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea along with it.

After retiring from the Navy, Chris became sedentary and tried every fad diet imaginable. "For a long time, I was the definition of insanity, doing the same things over and over again and expecting a different result," he admits. Even GLP-1 medication left him feeling sick with minimal results.

In 2023, Chris turned to the Center for Weight Management at Virginia Mason Franciscan Health in Silverdale. After initially hesitating, he decided on gastric bypass surgery in April 2024.

"I have no regrets," Chris says today. "I was scared, but I look back now with complete success. I wouldn't change a thing."

Chris has lost an incredible 150 pounds and kept it off. But he wants people to understand that surgery isn't "the easy way out."

"It's a life-long plan," Chris emphasizes. "The journey doesn't end with surgery. It truly begins once you lose the weight."

Today, Chris exercises regularly, follows a healthy diet, and credits the program's support group as essential to his success. Led by Keriann Dunning, Bariatric Program Coordinator at St. Michael Medical Center, the group meets every second Wednesday of the month.

"Everyone shares and learns from each other's experiences," Chris explains. "I always leave feeling reinvigorated, remotivated, and simply better."

"For the first time in my life I feel confident," he shares. "This change hasn't just been physical. It's been about seeing myself in a new, empowered way."

Kitsap students explored the future of healthcare at the 2026 Healthcare Career Expo, trading their typical school day for hands-on experiences in nursing, family medicine, radiology, surgical technology, respiratory therapy, dental care, and emergency medical services.

More than 250 students participated in this collaborative event hosted by Olympic College, Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, and community partners. Students sutured bananas, deciphered X-rays, watched intubation demonstrations, and learned about educational pathways into healthcare careers.

"What I really want the students to do is be curious, ask questions, and look into some options they might not otherwise consider," explained Dr. Lillian Robertson, Executive Director of the Marvin Williams Recreation Center and obstetrician-gynecologist at St. Joseph Medical Center. "Healthcare isn't just about science, biology, or math. It's about helping people and making a profound difference in their lives."

Students Geia and Angelica both agreed the hands-on approach made the difference. "I was always interested in medicine because of the idea of helping people," shared Geia. "The activities they provided actually helped push that idea of having fun with it."

More than 50 team members from St. Michael Medical Center and VMFH Family Medicine Clinic attended to share their expertise. Dr. Matthew Smith, family physician at Franciscan Family Medicine and Residency in Bremerton, taught students how to suture using "lacerated" bananas at one of the most popular booths.

"I love my job as a family medicine doctor and as a teacher," Dr. Smith shared. "I would encourage anyone thinking about a career in healthcare to consider medical school. I think a lot of people get intimidated by the extensive training and believe they can't do it. I'd like to persuade them that they absolutely can."

For the first time this year, the Expo also provided resources for high school graduates and adult learners exploring career changes. The event has grown significantly from its start three years ago and will return in Spring 2027.
