At just six and five years old, Evelyn Giese and Agustín (Augie) Carney Fannon are already facing a shared challenge: preclinical Type 1 diabetes. This early stage of the disease shows no symptoms yet, but it marks the beginning of a lifelong journey.

To help change that path, both families have enrolled in a clinical trial at MultiCare Mary Bridge Children’s. Their hope is to delay the disease’s progression for as long as possible.

“Managing a diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes can be really challenging with younger age groups,” says Bhuvana Sunil, MD, a pediatric endocrinologist at Mary Bridge Children’s and a principal investigator for the trial. “The longer we can delay full onset of this disease, the better quality of life these kids have.”

A MultiCare clinical trial may help slow the progression of Type 1 diabetes in kids, improving their long-term health and quality of life.

As you stand up following a long binge session of your favorite show, your back throws an angry ache your way. You do a quick stretch and it seems to help, but later that night the throbbing returns.

If it’s gone the next day, let’s call it a fluke. If you haven’t found relief a few weeks later, though, it may be time to call your provider.

Finding yourself hunched over as pain shoots down your back? It may be time to make some lifestyle changes.

Summer has hit the Pacific Northwest. That means longer days, more time outside and a break from those heavy jackets.

But it also means temperatures are spiking, and for many people, that means being stuck looking for creative ways to stay cool at home without air conditioning. https://multica.re/44PB9oW

There's nothing like being a kid during summer — no homework, no tests, no early mornings. It’s a break from the structured routine of school and a time for fun and relaxation.

While taking a break from schoolwork is essential, it’s equally important that kids’ minds remain active and engaged during the summer months. This not only helps prevent the “summer slide” — the learning loss that can happen when kids are out of school — but also smooths the transition back to classes.

“When it comes to keeping kids’ brains stimulated in summer, it’s important to incorporate physical activity, problem-solving and creativity,” says Deandra Cloy, LICSW, an integrated mental health therapist with the MultiCare Behavioral Health Network.

Balance fun and learning with engaging summer activities that boost creativity.

We are excited to announce that four MultiCare Pulse Heart Institute locations, including Good Samaritan Hospital, are among the nation's top performing hospitals for treatment of heart attack patients.

“This really is an impressive achievement for the entire team and it reflects all our efforts to provide the highest quality care…it's nice to see our efforts recognized by the American College of Cardiology.”
–Daniel Guerra, MD, Coronary Artery Disease COE Physician Leader

The award recognizes Good Samaritan Hospital, Auburn Medical Center, Tacoma General Hospital and Deaconess Hospital for their commitment to and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients and signifies that they’ve reached an aggressive goal of treating these patients to standard levels of care as outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations.

For the continued safety of our staff, visitors and patients — many of whom are high-risk — all individuals, regardless of vaccination status, must wear a mask when they come to a MultiCare building. The CDC and state of Washington's recent updated guidance on masking for vaccinated individuals does not apply to health care settings, including hospitals, ambulatory clinics and skilled nursing facilities.

"Our hospitals have been the source of hope and help through the whole dark journey — open through long, difficult days and nights, staffed with committed teams doing their jobs, the bulwark from which we confronted an unprecedented challenge. It is not exaggerating when we describe hospitals as indispensable community assets, providing critical support for the entire nation as we have slowly made our way through the COVID-19 crisis."

Like mother, like daughter. For Mother's Day, meet mother daughter duo Traysi Montgomery and Amber Nelson. Traysi works as an executive assistant, and her daughter Amber is an ICU nursing assistant.

"My mom inspired me to work in health care. She started at Tacoma General Hospital and I used to go with her to “take your child to work days” or just go visit her, so I met a lot of people, talked to a lot of people and saw a lot that happens at hospitals. That’s where I found my passion, and it has led me to working in a hospital, in the ICU as a CNA and a future RN."

The best part of working together? "We get to have breakfast together every other omelette Wednesday!"
