The DAD Projects

The DAD Projects The DAD Projects promotes the relationship between Fathers and infants/toddlers. What about YOUR father? Think of your earliest memory of your father.

If your father was a "good" father, what was it that made him good? If your father was NOT a "good" father, what did you miss? I would love to hear your story, if you're willing to share.

Telling your child

“It makes me sad when you don’t listen.”

Does not teach empathy, it teaches emotional manipulation.

Empathy needs to be modelled. It is not taught through explicit instruction. In fact, “forced empathy” impedes on the natural development of one’s internal moral compass. We realize that others are worthy of empathy when we experience the comfort of empathy, ourselves.

Empathy is not taught by making your child feel guilty when they’re behaviour makes you feel sad or angry. Empathy is taught by empathizing with your child.

Instead of “It makes me sad/angry when you don’t listen!”

Try “It’s hard for you to hear me sometimes, isn’t it? Is there anything I can do to help you with that?”

You can read more about empathy and what to do when your kids aren’t listening in my latest book 👇
