ATTENTION: INCLEMENT WEATHER PREPAREDNESS: January 21, 2026
Inclement weather has been forecasted in the National Capital Region (NCR) this weekend (January 24-25th). The following are a few helpful hints to assist you as you take the necessary steps to prepare:
------
BACKGROUNDER:
A significant, high-impact winter storm (Winter Storm Fern) is likely to affect the DC area this weekend, with snow potentially starting late Saturday and lasting through Sunday, bringing 5+ inches possible. Expect bitterly cold temperatures with highs in the 20s, making travel difficult.
For more details: https://weather.com/.../2026-01-21-winter-storm-fern-ice...
------
• Timing: Snow is expected to begin Saturday afternoon/evening, with the heaviest accumulation occurring Saturday night through Sunday, possibly lingering into Monday.
• Snowfall Amounts: While exact totals are uncertain, forecasters are monitoring potential for 5 or more inches, with some models suggesting over a foot of snow.
• Conditions: Extremely cold Arctic air will accompany the system, with highs in the 20s°F and lows in the teens, causing all precipitation to stick and likely leading to hazardous road conditions.
• Impact: This storm is expected to be a significant event, with potential for school closures and power outages.
======
RECOMMENDATIONS:
• Prepare for a significant snow event by checking supplies (salt, shovels, food, batteries) before Saturday. Monitor updated forecasts from The National Weather Service.
• Consider refilling and picking up your prescriptions no later than Friday.
• Avoid the shopping rush by preparing to shop early for groceries and household items.
======
ATAMMC OPERATING STATUS:
• Updates to NHCQ’s operating status will be provided as they are received.
• Expect to receive electronic communications from our MHS Genesis Patient Portal System
• Updates will also be provided on our Social Media and Public Web pages.

A heartfelt thank you to Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune for their partnership and support.

The recent loan of a second Mobile Dental Unit to us is a testament to the spirit of collaboration within the Military Health System. This will significantly enhance our ability to ensure the dental readiness of Marines in the accession pipeline, a critical component of maintaining a ready and lethal force.
