Sit-and-spin isn’t just fun, it’s a powerful vestibular input!
It is often used in PT and OT to improve:
• balance & body awareness
• core activation
• coordination & motor planning
• sensory regulation

Pro tip: pair spinning with heavy work (push, squeeze, crash) to help the body reset and stay organized.

Parent pro tips:Hills and ramps naturally encourage the heel to come down, give the calves an active stretch, and provide extra proprioceptive feedback.

Try it outdoors!
• Walk up grassy hills at the park
• Use playground ramps
• Walk up driveway slopes
• Nature trails with gentle inclines

Getting dressed is a big skill!
In OT, we practice everyday activities (ADLs) like putting on coats to build independence, coordination, and problem-solving. Breaking the task into small steps helps kids learn the sequence and feel successful.

Coat practice steps:
1️⃣ Put one arm through the first sleeve
2️⃣ Reach behind to find the other sleeve (this part can be tricky!)
3️⃣ Push the arm all the way through
4️⃣ Line up the zipper
5️⃣ Hold the bottom with one hand while the other hand pulls the zipper up

Lots of practice, cues, and patience help these everyday skills become easier over time.

Today we are exploring a game as a PT tool when used with intention. We started in sitting with the game turned off to explore positioning, reach, and spatial awareness. As the challenge increased, we turned the game on so the cows rotated, then added a peanut ball for weight bearing and postural demand.
What we’re working on:
* Head and trunk control during seated and supported weight-bearing positions

* Eye-hand coordination and visual tracking

* Motor planning and timing to capture and retrieve the cows

* Spatial awareness (judging distance, reach, and body-to-object relationship)

* Dissociation and separation of body parts (neck, head, arm)

* Upper-extremity strengthening and endurance

What we observed:
* Increased fatigue after 1–2 repetitions, with reliance on one hand for support

* Difficulty coordinating capturing the cow and then retrieving it with the hand smoothly

* In sitting, challenges with judging distance and deciding whether to move the body or adjust the toy to make contact. Tell us what you think about this toy! Yay or nay?

When kids have other plans, therapists have backup plans!!!
No hands-down weight bearing today, so we used wall-pressed pancake shaping for UE weight bearing with trunk and pelvic support. Adapt, don’t force. 💯💯💯

Looking for coordination activities for your active students who love a good challenge? Try these games by Joyce and Mari:

Skip Ball supports bilateral coordination, dynamic balance, and lower-body strength. Kids work on timing, weight shifting, and sustained movement which are foundational skills for running, jumping, and sports.

Mountain Climbers + Plank Ball Trap target proximal stability, endurance, and coordinated limb movement. Holding a plank to trap the ball adds an extra challenge for dynamic balance and controlled motor planning.

Turned an old salad spinner into a DIY sensory spinner with fairy lights.

Cheap, portable, and SO engaging for visual attention, cause-and-effect, and upper body work.

Watch for the how-to + therapy ideas 💡
