Practicing writing on vertical surfaces, such as chalkboards or whiteboards, can offer several benefits for occupational therapy in kids:
Improved Posture**: Writing on a vertical surface encourages children to stand or sit upright, promoting better posture compared to writing on a horizontal surface like a desk.

Shoulder Stability and Strength**: Vertical writing requires children to use larger arm movements, engaging shoulder muscles for stability and strength development.

Hand-Eye Coordination**: Writing on a vertical surface helps improve hand-eye coordination as children must coordinate their visual input with their hand movements to produce legible writing.

Bilateral Coordination**: Writing on a vertical surface often involves using both hands simultaneously, fostering bilateral coordination, which is crucial for various daily activities and academic tasks.

Visual Perceptual Skills**: Vertical writing can aid in the development of visual perceptual skills, including visual tracking, visual discrimination, and visual memory, as children visually attend to the vertical space while writing.

Encourages Whole Body Movement**: Writing on a vertical surface encourages whole-body movement, incorporating gross motor skills into the writing process, which is beneficial for children who may struggle with sitting still for extended periods.

Increased Engagement and Interest**: Writing on vertical surfaces can be more engaging and novel for children compared to traditional horizontal writing, motivating them to participate more actively in therapy sessions.
