Celebrate Women’s History Month

On this last day of Women’s History Month, we honor the strength, resilience, and achievements of women past and present.

From trailblazers who broke barriers to everyday heroes who uplifted their communities, women have shaped our world in countless powerful ways.

Let’s celebrate their stories, amplify their voices, and continue the work toward equality and opportunity for all.

Here’s to the women who inspire us, lead us, and remind us of what’s possible every single day.

In honor of Women’s History Month WWAARC would like to recognize Chrissy Shumate.

Chrissy is the Senior Director of Residential and Day Habilitation Services at WWAARC, where she has worked for 26 years. She began her career as a Direct Support Professional (DSP) at Fort Ann IRA and progressed through roles including Assistant Manager, Manager, and Program Director. Throughout her career, she has primarily worked in residential services but has also contributed to Family Support Services, Community Habilitation, Northern Day Habs, and the Supportive Living Program.

She joined WWAARC after moving to the area, already having experience with a different agency. What she values most about her job is supporting people in their growth and success. Chrissy has known many of the people she supports for decades and has witnessed their success along the way. Chrissy also loves mentoring and helping staff develop and advance.

Chrissy attributes her success to her strong drive to help others, learning from mistakes, a passion for the organization, and collaboration with her team.

A fun fact about her is that she enjoys DIY projects, often building or repurposing items she finds at yard or estate sales.

In honor of Women’s History Month WWAARC would like to recognize Michelle Bielawa.
Michelle Bielawa is the Assistant Executive Director of the Employment & Community Supports at both the Krumkill and Quaker Road locations. With 36 years at the agency, she joined because she was working residential for a different agency and wanted day hours.
Getting to see the people we support every day is what Michelle loves best about her job. No matter how life treats her, the people we support always bring a smile to her face and give her the best hugs when she needs them. She values witnessing both participant and staff development over the years. Michelle credits her success to the strong team around her, her calm, solution-focused approach, and the mentorship of amazing leaders from which she has learned a great deal.
Fun fact: In high school, she served as a First Responder riding ambulances with her father, and she also spent 12 years working as a pharmacy technician.
