Last week, the Administration gutted the Department of Education’s Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services. This office plays a vital role in ensuring students with disabilities receive the services and support they need to succeed in school. They also:
• Enforce the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and make sure schools follow the law.
• Fund programs to train and support special education teachers.
• Help parents of students with disabilities understand their rights and advocate for their children.
• Oversee programs that assist youth and adults with disabilities with employment.

But now, only a few people are left in this office to protect students’ rights. More than 95% of staff were fired, notified of termination, resigned, or retired this year.

Without people to enforce the law, states could ignore their responsibilities to students with disabilities. This would put millions of students at risk.

Help make sure this doesn’t happen.

Tell your members of Congress to protect the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services. Students with disabilities can't afford to lose essential services and supports!

🎉 October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM)!

Meet John Horton, an inspiring example of perseverance and success!

John joined WWAARC’s Supported Employment program through ACCES-VR in March 2023. Before connecting with us, John had proudly worked at Johnny Rockets in Crossgates Mall for 16 years. When COVID hit, he was sent home “for two weeks” — but was later informed via email that the restaurant would not reopen. John was heartbroken, but he didn’t give up. Determined to rebuild his confidence and get back to work, John partnered with our employment team. After six months of job development, he secured a position as a Catering Assistant at Teresian House in Albany — and he’s been thriving ever since!
Over the past two years, John has become a valued and beloved team member to both staff and residents. He truly enjoys going to work each day, knowing he’s making a difference in the lives of those he serves.
John shares a special bond with his job coach, Judson Parisi, whom he considers a mentor, confidant, and friend. With WWAARC’s support, John has not only rejoined the workforce but also regained his self-confidence, self-esteem, and sense of purpose.

👏 Way to go, John — your dedication and positivity are an inspiration to us all!

🎃 Trunk or Treat Alert! 👻

Join us this Sunday, October 12th at our Quaker Road office for a fun-filled Trunk or Treat hosted by the Aktion Club! 🚗🍬

This event is open to the public — everyone’s welcome to volunteer or bring their family for a spooktacular community celebration! 🧡

💡 We encourage some to bring sugar-free candy or non-sugar treats for those who can’t enjoy sweets.
🕰️ Please arrive between 11:30 and 11:45 AM to get set up before the fun begins!

Let’s come together for a day of costumes, candy, and community spirit! 🕸️

🍁✨ Today was a perfect Autumn Day for our yearly Fall Festival at Quaker Road 🍂. Filled with festive games 🎲, arts & crafts 🎨, music 🎵, a photo booth 📸, and delicious food 🍴!

🏆 Congratulations to the two Douglas E. Ferguson Award winners: Syreta Williams and Melissa Armstrong – both so deserving for their long-term dedication and hard work on behalf of those we serve.

Our friend, Assemblyman Matt Simpson, stopped by to enjoy the fun and drink some delicious Stewart's Shops Apple Cider and donuts!
