Orange Cane Blotch or Orange Felt (Cephaleuros virescens) is a blackberry disease picking up interest for southeast growers. Although it is an algae considered a subcuticular parasite, damage has been observed as deep as the cortex region. C. virescens also renders blackberry plants susceptible to secondary infections through cracks in the canes.

The color of these circular blotch lesions ranges from yellow to orange which can easily be confused with rusts, if seen with the naked eye. The felt-like appearance in the third image is due to the mass of sporangiophores present. The active sporulation seen in image 1 reveals the zoospores which contain special propeller-like structures used for mobility through actively flowing water.

C. virescens has the broadest host range out of the Cephaleuros genus and is also the causal organism for Algal Stem Blotch in blueberries. (For more information on Algal Stem Blotch: https://site.caes.uga.edu/blueberry/2021/09/algal-stem-blotch-on-blueberry/)

👉🏼Pruning, removal of infected plant material, and sanitation overall are crucial practices in pest management.

If you eat in America, you have a say in agriculture. Purchases are driven by what consumers want. If you see “grown in USA” produce stickers next to the same fruit or vegetable with a “product of Mexico” label, you can make a choice to support our farmers. If you know your produce of interest is currently being harvested in your area, yet supermarkets went with the cheaper and foreign option, you can politely make a request for locally grown. We’ve seen supermarkets take the step in a local direction but it takes unity of consumers. We all eat. We all play a part in the agricultural industry.
