Calling all runners! 💛💙🦄 The Boston Marathon is 5 days away! 🦄💙💛

Here’s a taper FAQ, backed by a recent meta-analysis in 2023: “Effects of tapering on performance in endurance athletes: a systematic review and meta-analysis”

Should I cut mileage?
Reduce volume ~40–60%.

Should I stop intensity?
Maintain race pace efforts.

Will I lose fitness this week?
Fitness is preserved while fatigue decreases.

Should I rest completely?
Stay consistent. Avoid major changes to routine.

Can I test new shoes or workouts?
Nothing new this week.

Why taper?
To optimize glycogen, neuromuscular function, and race-day performance.

You’ve already done the work. Nows the time to stay sharp and stay ready!

Desk Posture: Small Changes, Big Impact The first image shows poor seated posture. Sitting this way for long periods can place stress on your neck, shoulders, back, and hips — leading to pain and reduced function over time.
The second image demonstrates proper seated posture. Use these tips to set yourself up well at your desk:
Keep your feet flat on the floor
Avoid crossing your legs
Keep your wrists straight and elbows bent
Gently pull your shoulders back and down (away from your
ears)
Keep your hips and knees between 90-120°
Position the top of your monitor at eye level, about 18-24
inches away
Even with good posture, prolonged sitting increases pressure on the spine and can cause tightness in the hip flexors and hamstrings.
That's where a sit-to-stand desk (shown in the final image) can help — alternating between sitting and standing reduces strain and keeps you moving throughout the day.
Keep an eye on our page for an upcoming post on exercises to help improve your posture.

Furnace Brook PT offers its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Dr. Lyle Micheli following his recent passing. Dr. Micheli was a true visionary and leader in the field of pediatric orthopedics and for decades was at the forefront of advocacy for advanced research and enhanced access to care for his patient population. While providing the pinnacle of quality patient care, Dr. Micheli was also an incredible mentor to generations of orthopedic doctors. Furnace Brook PT owes a significant debt of gratitude to Dr. Micheli, who took our founder Jay Bernasconi under his wing from a young age and provided an unprecedented amount of access and guidance. He provided an amazing opportunity and a great foundation for a new clinic to build from. Without the kindness, knowledge, and generosity Dr. Micheli was able to impart, Furnace Brook PT would look very different today. He will forever be a fond memory for us and keep a special place in our hearts. May he rest in peace.

🏃‍♀️💪 Marine Corps Marathon Spotlight 💪🏃‍♀️

There’s nothing more inspiring than watching an athlete put in the work long before race day. This patient has logged years of consistency, discipline, and strength work to keep her body marathon-ready — and it shows. 🙌

From early-morning miles to injury-prevention sessions, she’s built a foundation that’s carried her through multiple marathons, including the iconic Marine Corps Marathon. 🦅🌟

Success like this doesn’t come from one training cycle — it comes from committing to your health, trusting the process, and showing up even when it’s hard.

Proud to be part of her journey and even prouder to cheer her on as she keeps crushing big goals. 🫶🔥

Here’s to strong bodies, strong minds, and the miles ahead. 🏅
