What are Flower Remedies & How Do They Work?
(Or Flower Essences)
Flowers make us smile and bring us joy, just by looking at them. They offer us an emotional lift through their: color, fragrance, texture, taste, form, gesture, sacred geometric patterns, vast shapes and more. Each feature of a flower is part of Nature’s grand design to bring us into harmony with our Sacred Self. Flowers allow an opportunity for balance and healing from every emotion we can experience.
British physician, Dr. Edward Bach brought flower remedies to the modern western world in the 1920 and 1930’s. He was on a quest for the prevention of disease. Bach came to understand: “There is no healing unless there is a change in outlook, peace of mind, and inner happiness.”
After working with vaccines, then homeopathy for 15 years, Bach finally began to make what he called flower remedies: liquid, pattern-infused solutions made from individual plant flowers. Each remedy contained a specific imprint which brought a balancing, repairing and re-building influence to energetic imbalances in humans; especially at the emotional, mental and spiritual levels. The flowers worked on the “principle of like connecting to like”. One way to understand this is: the growth characteristics of the flowering plant match that of the human’s specific imbalance.
Bach further explained: “The action of these remedies is to raise our vibrations and open our channels for the reception of the Spiritual Self; to flood our natures with the particular virtue we need, and wash out the fault that is causing the harm. They (flower remedies) are able, like beautiful music or any uplifting thing which gives us inspiration…to bring us peace and relieve our suffering. They cure, not by attacking the disease, but by flooding our bodies with the beautiful vibrations of our Higher Nature, in the presence of which, disease melts away as snow in the sunshine.”
Dr. Bach never meant his 38 flower remedies to be therapeutic in the sense of curing a disease. He did, however, understand that true healing comes from within. Working in London during WWI, he saw tremendous emotional trauma. This helped him realize that overcoming mental stress opens the way for a person’s natural healing energy to easily flow through the body, raise the vibrational frequency and allow the God-given healing process to occur.
He believed: “The greatest gift that you can give to others is to be happy and hopeful yourself; then you draw them up out of their despondency.” History shows that the remedies helped Bach as much as they did his patients.
In the late 1980’s one of my teachers, Machaelle Small Wright, wrote another important observation: “Essences offer a two-prong attack in that they not only physically reconnect, balance, and support you electrically; but they also give you insight into what is causing the problem.”
By the 1990’s, the use of flower essences had expanded through-out the world. Many additional flowers were made into the water-infused preparations. In addition the understanding emerged that flower remedies work though the central nervous system to clear deep emotions which have caused subluxations over time. When these energetic blockages are gently removed, one’s health can dramatically improve (emotional, mental, physical and spiritual).
Science has come to understand how the body works. We are complex and amazing systems. The new wave of discovery is about how the elaborate energetic body systems function and interact. Energy medicine is the new frontier of western science, and flower remedies are part of this field.
I first studied flower remedies with Richard Kranz and Patricia Kaminski who together developed the Flower Essence Society (FES), an international organization based near Nevada City, CA. Impressed by their very pristine use of biodynamic gardening, harvesting methods and preparation of flower essences (including the 38 Bach remedies), I went on to study with them and became a certified Flower Essence Practitioner through the FES. This has been an in-depth and expensive process, but incredible. I now work with the 38 Bach remedies and about 130 FES flower formulas. Richard and Patricia’s understanding of the effects of each flower is amazing. As a society, practitioners are part of the ever-increasing body of insight and information.
Because of the strong results I am seeing with clients, I am opening up more time to work 1 on 1 with people by integrating the flower remedies with various emotional pattern-breaking techniques that I have studied for 20+ years. Thanks to Zoom and other on-line formats, I will now be able to work with clients around the globe! As such, I am teaming up with other FES practitioners to offer more web-based education. More on that later!
