Family medicine is about being there for every stage of life,” says Dr. Deseray Aguirre, DO. Dr. Aguirre completed her residency at MCWAH–Columbia St. Mary’s Family Medicine Program in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she trained in full-spectrum family medicine, including maternity and women’s health. Today, she provides prenatal and postpartum care at the SIU Center for Family Medicine – Quincy, caring for both parent and baby in one trusted setting. Dr. Aguirre’s approach is calm, collaborative, and centered on trust. She believes in helping patients make informed choices and feel confident through every stage of pregnancy and family life. Staying on your eating plan during the holidays can feel challenging, but a few small steps can help you enjoy the day and stay on track. Our experts at the SIU Medicine SLIM Clinic offer these simple ways to approach your Thanksgiving plate:

• Drink a glass of water before your meal.
• Plan your plate before you fill it, choosing lean protein, vegetables and a small portion of your favorites.
• Eat slowly and pause between servings to give your body time to feel full.
• Bring a dish that fits your goals so you have at least one dependable option.

Healthy habits can stay in place, even on days filled with tradition, connection and good food. From all of us at SIU Medicine, we hope your day is warm, safe and restorative. Happy Thanksgiving.

Safe food handling tips for Thanksgiving hosts

If you are welcoming family and friends into your home this week, a few simple steps can help you prepare a meal that is both delicious and safe.

• Thaw your turkey safely in the refrigerator, giving it enough time to defrost at a steady, safe temperature.
• Set up separate prep areas so raw meat stays apart from fruits, vegetables and ready-to-eat foods.
• Wash hands and surfaces often, especially after handling raw poultry or switching tasks in the kitchen.
• Use a food thermometer and cook turkey and stuffing to the recommended internal temperature.
• Refrigerate leftovers within two hours, using shallow containers to help them cool quickly.

Hosting takes care, planning and heart. These steps help protect your guests and support a healthy, memorable holiday. From all of us at SIU Medicine, we wish you a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving week.

Patient-centered care, made simple.

When one recent patient visited our Walk-In Clinic, they described the experience as “very efficient.”

They shared, “Dr. Larson was informed, respectful and communicated well. My prescriptions were sent to the pharmacy, and I had confirmation before I even got to my car. I picked them up within two hours of leaving the clinic.”

That’s what forward, patient-focused care looks like — efficient, informed and compassionate.
