Good afternoon! This week’s post is about Fall Fest! Many towns will be holding a fall festival in the next couple of weeks. These events can be a great way to work on speech and language skills. They are also fun for family outings. Some towns may have various activities such as petting zoos and games to play. Some may have hayrides and other activities.

A Fall Fest can be a great way to target vocabulary such as nouns and verbs. You can also describe what you are seeing to teach adjectives. If you participate in any activities, you can work on sequencing by listing the activities in the order you will do them in. A festival offers the opportunity to target language in a multisensory and hands on way. To make activities more engaging and help teach vocabulary, try to incorporate all of the senses while to talk about what your child is experiencing.

For example, if they are eating an apple you can discuss if the apple is sweet or sour, the colors of the apple, the parts of an apple, how the apple feels, and how it smells. If they are picking out a pumpkin, you can talk about if the pumpkin is big or small, bumpy or smooth, the colors, and the weight.

Have a wonderful week and let me know if you go to a festival! Be safe and have fun!

Good afternoon!

This week’s activity is leaf painting! There are two different ways this can be done, and Pinterest has a lot of cute examples. The first is to find a big leaf and paint a design on it. The second is to use the leaves as brushes or prints to press on paper once you have paint on them.

This activity is great for working on actions (verbs) like pick up, paint, press, pick, choose, want, give, take, push, and dip. It is also good for working on describing (adjectives) such as colorful, pretty, smooth, rough, big, and little. You can work on early quantities and colors too!

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s speech, language, or feeding development, we offer free consultations. Our phone number is 501-481-1565 and our email is info@junipertherapyservices.com

This week in Speech therapy, I am using the book “We’re Going on a Leaf Hunt” with my younger clients. There are several things I love about this book for early readers and younger children:
1) It is like the song “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” which was a popular song/video in daycares, so some children are familiar with the flow of the book. This is engaging and makes it easy for them to sing it as I read.
2) It is repetitive which helps early readers learn words and helps teach new vocabulary.
3) It uses prepositions!
4) It pairs perfectly with a leaf or fall activity.
5) It has a read aloud on Youtube, which makes the book reading like a movie for kids. You can Google “We’re Going on a Leaf Hunt Read Aloud” and a 4-minute video of someone reading the book while showing the pages comes up. This allows for easier access to this book.

Let me know what your favorite books to read with your children are, or if you read this book with your child and thought it was neat!

Good morning!

Our second fall post is a scavenger hunt! This activity is a fun way to work on vocabulary and there are many ways to do it. You can search inside or outside, over a big space or in a sensory bin, with items preprepared or items found as you go! The possibilities for this activity are limitless!

Some things you can look for include different colored leaves, animals, and flowers. You can also look for items with cool shapes such as clouds, rocks, and sticks. These are just some possible ideas. If you want to have an indoor scavenger hunt or a sensory bin, Dollar Tree has some fun items you can incorporate.

Vocabulary

🍁Squirrel

🍁Acorn

🍁Chilly/Cool

🍁Fall/Autumn

Concepts

🍁Plurals

🍁Prepositions

🍁Actions

🍁Compare/Contrast

If you are outside, you can incorporate more movement by having your child an obstacle course as you go, or do a Simon says game to work on teaching verbs (actions). As you walk along looking for items, you can have your child jump, skip, frog jump, run, walk backwards, etc for so many steps at a time as you go along.

Thank you!

Good morning! With cooler temperatures this weekend, it seems fitting to start our fall activity postings!

This weekend we are excited to talk about making leaf piles! There is a ton of vocabulary you can introduce while making a leaf pile. You can talk about what you are doing to make or play in the leaf pile to teach verbs (actions) such as:
🍁 rake “Let’s rake up some leaves”
🍁 jump “We can jump in the leaves”
🍁 push “We are pushing the leaves into a pile”
🍁 look “Look at the beetle on the leaf”
🍁 make “I want to make another pile”

You can name the things you see:
🍁 leaf
🍁 sticks
🍁 squirrel
🍁 acorns
🍁 tree

You can also describe what you are seeing!
🍁 big/small “That leaf is big”
🍁 crunchy “That leaf feels crunchy”
🍁 colors
🍁 tall/short “My leaf pile is tall”
🍁many/few “There are only a few leaves here”

These are just some ideas for different ways you can think about vocabulary while playing in leaves. Tip: When using a new word or a word your child might not know yet, it is a great idea to use it several times throughout an activity, and in different ways to help them learn it.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s speech, language, or feeding development, please reach out for a free consultation. Have a wonderful weekend!

Good morning! It’s a wonderful Wednesday! Today’s activity involves being in the kitchen! If you want to get your child’s attention, it’s time to start cooking!

There are some wonderful and easy recipes you can have your child help with depending on their age and skill levels! For young children, having them spread something (peanut butter, Nutella, jam, hummus, veggie dip, etc) on fruit, veggies, or crackers is a good task. For older kids, recipes such as salads, sandwiches, or Chex mixes may be a great idea. Once children are old enough and have the motor skills to safely complete tasks involving knives or cooking, the recipes can increase in complexity even more! Just make sure you are there to supervise and offer help as needed. They even have child safe knives that won’t cut skin!

While working in the kitchen, you can target a limitless variety of skills. Following directions, sequencing, cause and effect, hypotheticals, wh-questions, and vocabulary. You can also work on motor skills! While cooking, you can teach kitchen and food vocabulary, actions (cut, dice, spread, spear, set, hand, pass, etc), and describing!

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s speech, language, or feeding development, we offer free consultations. Our phone number is 501-481-1565 and our email is info@junipertherapyservices.com
