🌕🔴 Tonight, the smallest Full Moon of the year meets one of the largest stars you can see with your naked eyes.

The Blue Micromoon passes just 0.4 degrees from Antares, the red supergiant heart of Scorpius. Through binoculars, the colour contrast is extraordinary: the Moon's cold white glow beside the warm copper-red of a dying star 700 times wider than our Sun. If placed at the centre of our solar system, Antares would swallow Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars whole.

For observers in southeastern Australia, New Zealand, Chile, and Argentina, the Moon passes directly in front of Antares in a lunar occultation. Because Antares is so enormous, it has a measurable angular diameter even at 550 light-years. Through a telescope, it may take a fraction of a second to fade rather than blinking out instantly, briefly revealing the star's physical size.

From everywhere else, the pair sits close together in the southern sky around midnight. No occultation, but a stunning conjunction. A Blue Moon, a Micromoon, and a red supergiant, all in one night
