“Our application process focuses on more than academics,” said Donna Menarek, Director of Marketing and Development. “We look at how students overcome adversity—how they navigate and persist through educational barriers.”

The scholarship fund relies on community support—raffles, silent auctions, donations, and sponsors—to ensure these students get the boost they deserve. “Wispact’s dollars are very well spent,” said Gilliland. “Our students are resilient, talented, and working hard to make a difference.”

Society’s Assets welcomes community members to join their efforts. Whether through attending the June fundraiser, volunteering on a committee, or donating to the scholarship fund, every action helps open doors for future scholars. To learn more or contribute, visit www.societysassets.org.

Since its founding in 1974, Society’s Assets has been a beacon of independence and opportunity for people with disabilities across southeastern Wisconsin. What began as a grassroots movement by individuals determined to live fuller lives has grown into a comprehensive nonprofit serving five counti...

Staff members Tami and Kalli stand with some of the graduates of the Taking Care of You class series. The class met weekly to learn to manage life's challenges in a healthy way. The class also taught healthy ways to take better care of one's self physically and mentally. Thank you to both the Kenosha Chamber of Commerce for use of the conference room and to the Kenosha Women's Network for providing a grant to teach the series.

October 15 is White Cane Safety Day, a time to raise awareness about state White Cane Laws across the country. White Cane Safety Day takes place during National Pedestrian Safety Month, recognized throughout October. For many people who are blind or low vision, a white cane is a critical tool for moving safely around their home, neighborhood and community.

White Cane Policy - Wisconsin Council of the Blind & Visually Impaired - Free White cane for people who are low vision or blind. Refer any of your family or consumers to Tami for more information.

History of the Law: 1977 c. 302; 2005 a. 354.
WI Stat. §346.26 Blind pedestrian on highway.

(1) An operator of a vehicle shall stop the vehicle before approaching closer than 10 feet to a pedestrian who is carrying a cane or walking stick which is white in color or white trimmed with red and which is held in an extended or raised position or who is using a service animal, as defined in §106.52(1)(fm), and shall take such precautions as may be necessary to avoid accident or injury to the pedestrian. The fact that the pedestrian may be violating any of the laws applicable to pedestrians does not relieve the operator of a vehicle from the duties imposed by this subsection.

(2) Nothing in this section shall be construed to deprive any totally or partially blind person not carrying the white or the red and white cane or walking stick or not using a service animal, as defined in §106.52(1)(fm), of the rights of other pedestrians crossing highways, nor shall the failure of such totally or partially blind pedestrian to carry such cane or walking stick or to use a service animal be evidence of any negligence.

(3) No person who is not totally or partially blind shall carry or use on any street, highway or other public place any cane or walking stick which is white in color, or white trimmed with red.

Sunday, October 5, was World Teacher’s Day, a time to recognize and celebrate educators who open doors through knowledge and inclusion—like Elisha Zuaro, a dedicated literacy specialist who is empowering students through literacy, especially Braille literacy.

A proud graduate of the Alabama School for the Blind, Elisha went on to earn her bachelor’s in elementary education from Jacksonville State University and a master’s in education from Vanderbilt University, specializing in teaching children who are visually impaired.

Now serving as a literacy specialist for grades 6–12 at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind, Elisha is also the secretary of the American Association of Blind Teachers, an ACB special interest affiliate.

Thank you, Elisha, and all teachers who make learning accessible and empowering for every student.
