EPSDT (Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic, and Treatment) is a Medicaid benefit that ensures children receive regular checkups, vaccines, vision and hearing screenings, dental care, developmental assessments, and any medically necessary follow-up services.

These visits help detect issues early when they’re easiest to treat and ensure every child receives complete, age-appropriate care. An annual EPSDT is also required for needed referrals and to continue having insurance coverage.

If your child is covered by Medicaid, call us to make sure they’re up-to-date on their EPSDT visits.

If your teen is more tired than usual, it might not just be school stress. Low iron could be the culprit.

Iron deficiency is extremely common in teen girls due to growth, menstrual cycles, and busy schedules. Signs include fatigue, headaches, dizziness, and trouble concentrating.

Good sources of iron include lean meats, beans, leafy greens, and iron-fortified cereals, and pairing iron-rich foods with vitamin C helps absorption. In some cases, supplements may be recommended.

Think your teen might be anemic? Call today to schedule a quick screening. We can check iron levels and help get your teen back to feeling like themselves.

If your teen’s thumb scrolls faster than your morning coffee pours, it might be time for a social media reset.

While smartphones and social apps are part of modern life, too much time online can interfere with sleep, schoolwork, friendships, and mental health. Experts recommend creating clear limits for screen time, such as turning off devices during homework, setting “no phone” windows before bed, and designating phone-free zones like the dinner table or bedroom.

For younger children, the AAP suggests limiting non-school screen use, but for teens, it’s about establishing balanced digital habits and ensuring screens don’t replace sleep, activity, and face-to-face time.

Not sure if your teens' social media or screen habits are appropriate? Call our office today to schedule an appointment to speak to one of our providers.

Today we recognize Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose leadership in the Civil Rights Movement helped end legal segregation and advance equal rights for all Americans.

His work reminds us of the importance of fairness, respect, and equitable access to care for every child and family we serve.

Wishing everyone a meaningful MLK Day.

Is your child struggling to read?

Dyslexia is a common learning difference that affects how the brain processes written language, but it doesn’t reflect a child’s intelligence or effort.

Signs can include difficulty sounding out words, slow or labored reading, trouble with rhyming, mixing up letter order, or avoiding reading altogether.

Many children show early signs in kindergarten–2nd grade, but symptoms often become more noticeable as reading demands increase in later grades.

Early recognition is key, and with the right support, dyslexic learners thrive. Evidence-based interventions such as structured literacy programs like Orton-Gillingham, multi-sensory reading instruction, and targeted phonics support can significantly improve reading skills and help children build confidence.

If you notice any of these signs or have concerns about your child’s reading progress, we can guide you toward screening, resources, and school-based evaluations. Call Etowah Pediatrics to schedule an appointment.
