Today we celebrate and honor individuals with Down syndrome and the families who support them.

Children with Down syndrome thrive when they receive consistent healthcare. Annual wellness visits are especially important to monitor growth and development, review hearing and vision, screen for thyroid and cardiac concerns, support learning and behavior, and coordinate recommended labs and referrals. Regular visits allow us to partner closely with families, anticipate needs, and adjust care plans as children grow.

World Down Syndrome Day is a great reminder to stay up to date on wellness visits. Reach out to schedule your child’s annual checkup or message us through the portal. Our staff at Etowah Pediatrics cannot wait to see you and your family.

Is it time for my child to have a cell phone?

There’s no single “right age” for a first cell phone. Readiness depends more on maturity, responsibility, and family needs than grade level alone. Consider whether your child can follow rules, manage screen time without constant reminders, and understand basic safety around texting, social media, and online interactions.

If you decide to start, set clear boundaries from the beginning such as where the phone is stored at night, screen time limits, which apps are allowed, and expectations around school and family time.

Ongoing conversations about digital safety, kindness, and privacy are just as important as the device itself.

If parents want a good book resource, Dr. Hester recommends “The Anxious Generation” by Jonathan Haidt.

Set expectations before the phone is handed over and revisit those rules regularly as your child grows. If you need help figuring out what parental controls are needed, chat with a provider at your next visit.

Does your child stutter?

Some speech disfluency such as repeating sounds or words can be a normal part of language development, especially during periods of rapid growth in younger children. Many kids outgrow this phase on their own. However, new-onset stuttering after about age 6 is less common and deserves closer attention.

It’s a good idea to consider a speech evaluation if stuttering lasts longer than 6 months, is getting worse, causes frustration or avoidance of speaking, or is accompanied by tension or struggle behaviors.

Early support can make a big difference, and help is available.
If you have concerns about your child’s speech or notice changes after early childhood, reach out to our office or bring it up at your next visit.

You can schedule an appointment by calling our office or you can request an appointment through the portal.

Around six months, babies are becoming more active, curious, and expressive. You may notice new movements and sounds emerging as your baby continues to grow and explore.

Every baby develops at their own pace, but here are common milestones many parents see around this age:

What many 6-month-olds are doing:
- Rolling both directions (tummy to back and back to tummy)
- Reaching for and grasping objects, often bringing them to their mouth
- Sitting with support or briefly sitting independently
- Babbling with sounds like “ba,” “da,” or “ma”
- Responding to their name and enjoying social interaction
- Showing curiosity about people and surroundings

Remember, milestone timelines can vary, and development is not a race.

Your baby’s six-month visit is a great time to talk through milestones and any questions you have so bring your observations, and we’ll review them together. Need to schedule a wellness visit? Call our office today to schedule.
