Welcome to Beyond the Break. Dr. Carlton has a deep passion for addressing mental illness with the underserved. He completed a Master’s in Nursing with a specialty in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and graduated with a Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP)from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dr. Carlton was the recipient of the International Society Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurses Association 2019 Diversity and Equity Award. He was also the 2020 recipient of the Pauline Brown Nursing Leadership Scholarship. He is an active member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. He has volunteered on panel discussions in the community to address the stigma of mental illness in African American men. He believes in ‘keeping it real’ communication style.

Dr. Carlton was the first African American male to graduate with a DNP from UNC-Chapel Hill. He maintained very high academic standings while maintaining his responsibilities as a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Public Health Service. His duty station is the Federal Medical Center in Butner, North Carolina where he practices in the Forensic Psychiatry Department. He has received numerous awards and letters of recommendation for his outstanding service and work ethic.
