The older I get, the more strongly I believe that God’s design for healing is woven throughout creation in ways that different cultures have recognized for centuries.
On my recent trip to Sedona, I visited a tourist site where there was a Native American Medicine Wheel. According to the tour guide, Native Americans used it for healing and self-reflection. If someone faced a challenge, they were encouraged to walk around the wheel and consider if a particular area of their life (mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual) was out of balance, causing the particular illness or challenge. The idea was that most ailments could be resolved by doing this type of self-reflection, using the medicine wheel to identify areas of weakness/disharmony. This talk of self-reflection reminded me of the concept of German New Medicine (how all dis-ease is thought to be related to specific conflict(s) in one's life), and also of homeopathy (using one's unique physical, emotional symptoms to determine a specific remedy).
This may come as a surprise, but not too many years ago, I would have quickly dismissed something like this medicine wheel as too "woo" or even (gasp)- sinful. The idea of taking one's emotions into consideration for a physical ailment, much less the emotions being the sole reason for physical illness- made no logical sense. However, personal experiences and now working with people to help heal their own bodies of physical discomforts, I have slowly changed my opinon.
So often, we feel like we have to choose between “either, or” when approaching different healing modalities - think: conventional vs holistic medicine, and all of the variations within each of those categories. But what if we embraced a “both, and” mindset instead? We can honor our own beliefs while still being curious and learning from others. We don’t have to be in opposition to everything that’s different- we can approach life with humility, trusting that God’s truth is big enough to reveal itself to us in a way that speaks to each of us, uniquely. Ultimately, I believe that living from a place of love instead of fear is what allows us to most clearly hear from God. 💛
