You may have seen “legal” Delta-9 products at gas stations or online and assumed they are mild or low risk. What most people don’t realize is how different products can be from traditional cannabis.

Delta-9 is created through a chemical process and infuses the result into gummies, vapes, and beverages. Potency varies widely from brand to brand, and many products contain far higher THC concentrations than people expect. Testing is inconsistent, which means the actual dose, purity, and chemical byproducts can shift from batch to batch.

Delta-9 interacts with the brain’s cannabinoid receptors in the same way as traditional high-THC cannabis. Heavy or frequent use can lead to tolerance, withdrawal symptoms, anxiety spikes, mood disruption, sleep disturbance, and difficulty cutting back without support.

If you or someone you love is struggling with Delta-9 dependence, New Waters Recovery can help.

What if sobriety isn’t restrictive, but rebellious?

In this conversation, Kevin Bandy, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Voyage Recovery, reframes recovery as something quietly radical. He talks about how staying sober can feel punk rock in its own way, choosing honesty, independence, and self-definition over chaos. Kevin also reflects on how being given permission to define his own version of a higher power allowed him to stay open long enough for real change to happen.

A DUI does not always mean someone needs long-term treatment, but it can be a clear signal to pause and reassess.

New Waters Recovery offers a short-term (seven day minimum) residential (inpatient) option that can be used proactively after a DUI, helping individuals reflect, stabilize, and address behaviors early.

Often choosing treatment preemptively may be seen as a constructive alternative to more severe consequences, demonstrating accountability and willingness to make changes.

In some cases, treatment is presented as an option instead of jail time, but that is up to individual judges at sentencing.

If you or someone you love is navigating decisions after a DUI, our team can help you understand whether short-term residential care is an appropriate option.

If quitting w**d feels harder than you expected, the problem is not you. The problem is potency.

Today’s cannabis products look very different than they did a few decades ago. High-potency flower, concentrates, dabs, wax, and distillates can reach THC levels that overwhelm the brain’s natural balance, especially with daily use. Sleep disruption, irritability, anxiety spikes, appetite changes, and emotional volatility are now common symptoms when someone tries to quit.

Whippets, the nitrous oxide canisters sold at gas stations, smoke shops, and online, have surged in popularity through social media and party culture. Brands like Galaxy Gas have become part of a growing trend among teens and young adults looking for an accessible, quick high.

These products are anything but harmless. When inhaled, nitrous oxide cuts off oxygen to the brain and can cause asphyxiation, fainting, nerve damage, and serious neurological issues. Repeated use has been linked to vitamin B12 deficiency, brain and spinal cord damage, anemia, a weakened immune system, and long-term nerve injury that can lead to paralysis, and in some cases, death. Use during pregnancy can increase the risk of birth defects. The FDA has issued public warnings about the serious health risks associated with recreational nitrous oxide use.

What is easy to buy can become difficult to stop. If a weekend experiment has started turning into something more, call or text New Waters for confidential support. 919-670-8119
