What an incredible story to share!

A resident at our Wilmington community was recently featured in the news for publishing a memoir about growing up as one of 20 children during the Great Depression. From all of us at The Cambridge at Brier Creek, we’re cheering her on and proud to share her story!

Marie Kilkinney is 96 years old and a newly published author. Her book, Four in a Tub: A Memoir, chronicles her childhood during the Great Depression as one of 20 siblings — 13 girls and 7 boys. Kilkinney was the 15th child.

So proud of everyone who had the courage to get up on stage and share their talents. From singing to dancing and everything in between, the performances were incredible!

🌟 Meet Kaitlyn!

Kaitlyn is a Raleigh native and animal lover with a degree in Animal Science from North Carolina State University. She’s worked on horse farms across Eastern NC and brings the same care and dedication to our residents- often greeting everyone with her signature, “My pleasure!”

When she’s not at The Cambridge, Kaitlyn enjoys hiking, gardening, arts & crafts, and spending time with her fish (including her betta, Spiderman 🐠).

How we began the Optimal Living journey

Dedication, passion and a track record of success

In 1999, following a successful 14-year career as a nursing home administrator, Kendall Oliver stepped out on his own to further pursue his passion for senior living. In 2000 he opened Cambridge Hills, a 120-bed assisted living facility, in Roxboro, North Carolina.

Since then he has owned, operated, or consulted with 11 senior living properties. This was the first community he developed, built, and operated from the ground up. “I realized that to develop the culture I wanted, I needed to start from scratch,” says Kendall. “I wanted to create an environment where the staff shared my vision and were empowered to make decisions that would enable them to achieve our goals. This vision began with a simple idea: to create a place where I would want to live or have my mother live.”

After the success with the Cambridge Hills facilities, Kendall was convinced that he could extend his vision and operational experience to senior independent living. In 2008, after finding a partner/investor with a similar mission, Kendall and COC Investment Group (an affiliate of Cary Oil Co., Inc.) became partners in what has now become the Cambridge Village Optimal Living Brand. The first community under this brand was built in Apex, North Carolina, followed by Cambridge Village of Wilmington, North Carolina.
