“What the hell are drainage pathways?”

The pathways of the body that are crucial for detoxification of unwanted elements/toxins.

They include your skin via sweating, kidneys via urine, lungs via breathing/expelling, colon via stools, and the lymphatic system.

Detoxification begins at the cellular level, continues to organs/tissues, lymphatic system, then the liver/bile ducts, and finally exits through the colon.

Think of it like a drainage funnel.

When there are blockages or stagnation from improper drainage, the toxins that should be dumped into the bile ducts and moved through are instead dumped into the bloodstream (yikes). In other words, everything upstream is unable to efficiently drain.

These unfiltered and undisposed of toxins are now systemic and can result in organ damage if not addressed.

To ensure proper removal of toxins/pathogens, we must keep drainage pathways open so they may easily move out of the body.

Think of your body like a house. When it’s dusty and dirty and time to clean, you wouldn’t just take a broom and stir up all the dust without properly collecting it and disposing. You may open the windows or door to allow for proper filtration.

Same thing with our body. Without a way for the toxins to exit, they will continue to recirculate in the body until the ‘flood gates” are open. Without sufficient drainage, the “dust” will continue to circulate and create symptoms eventually leading to what we know as chronic !llness or d!sease.

Unlike our circulatory system, the lymphatic system requires movement or other forms of lymphatic support (dry brushing, rebounding, herbs, hydration etc) for proper functioning.

This is why movement is so crucial for optimal health. Otherwise, one will experience lymphatic stagnation which leads to susceptibility to illness, inflammation, a domino effect of hormonal/metabolic problems, and a myriad of symptoms. Some may include: brain fog, swelling, fatigue, easily s!ck, cellulite, ezcema and skin issues, joint pain etc.

What leads to stagnation?

Did you know that s***m production is down 60% in the last 50 years and it’s projected that production will reach ZERO by 2045?

So, what is contributing to this?

We are exposed to thousands of toxins on a daily basis, from what we consume, products we use, to our environment, to the prescriptions we take. All of these HEAVILY impact our fertility levels.

But, what about stress? How does stress impact fertility?

When we are under stress, whether from external sources [ie. environment, work, consumption, product use, pharmaceuticals, our reactions, conditioned behaviors, trauma or just life in general] or internal sources [!nfection, toxin overload, chronic !llness, deficiencies, chronic prescription use, path0gens etc] our body goes into “fight or flight” mode.

Stress short circuits the luteal phase in women. Normally, as estrogen increases sharply around day 9-10 of the menstration cycle, follicle stimulating hormone decreases, spiking luteinizing hormone to get ready for one egg to drop for ovulation. During ovulation, estrogen levels and LH decrease while progesterone increases to fertilize the egg [typically at day 19-21 of cycle]. Therefore, estrogen is more dominant in the first phase and progesterone is more dominant in second phase. Progesterone is commonly called as the “feeder” for cortisol, therefore high stress levels directly impact progesterone levels.

If under stress [especially chronic], the body goes into estrogen dominance, thereby decreasing estrogen levels or causing the level to be inline with progesterone. This causes shorter cycles, spotting, bloating, acne (especially chin), water retention, irritability, headless and cramping.

In men, stress causes a decrease in testosterone, conversion to DHT or to estrogen. Higher DHT levels can cause prostate inflammation, hair growth on back, baldness, difficulty urinating or prostate pain/secretions. High estrogen causes breast tissue growth and feminization [common with anabolic steroids].

This is why managing stress, lowering internal stress levels and getting the body into PNS state as much as possible is necessary especially in our stress-ridden society.

When the body is under stress, whether from an external source or internal, it goes into fight or flight mode. Survival is the main focus.

Since the body is merely trying to survive, hormone pathways become interrupted. Under stress, the hypothalamus in the brain tells the pituitary gland to release CRH which tells the adrenal medulla to secrete norepinephrine [chemical that acts both as a neurotransmitter and a stress hormone]. This starts a new loop to secrete ACTH to tell the adrenal cortex to secrete cortisol.

In a short term response this looks like, increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, increased blood glucose, dilation of bronchioles in lungs, reduced urine output, decreased digestion and increased metabolic rate. Also, the presence of cortisol suppresses the immune system.

In long term stress, this looks like a retention of sodium and water, increased blood pressure, decreased insulin sensitivity which in turn increases insulin, increases inflammation, and decreases growth hormone and thyroid hormones. Typically, if there are high levels of TSH and/or cortisol, there will be decreased T3 levels.

Stress also signals a steroidal hormone pathway called the “Pregnenolone Steal” aka “Cortisol Steal”. All steroid hormones in the body start with Vitamin B5, and these levels are often high in those with excess stress. Vitamin B5 is used to create acetyl CoA which is used to synthesize cholesterol in the liver. More cholesterol is produced when needed to make more stress hormones.

Circulating LDL’s (commonly known as “bad” cholesterol” create pregnenolone which can then move down two pathways.

Either the s*x hormone pathway by conversion to testosterone or progesterone. Since progesterone is a precursor to cortisol, when the body is under stress progesterone can be sacrificed in order to make testosterone or cortisol.

In long-term stress, the body will give hormones to cortisol while sacrificing s*x hormones. When women don’t have adequate progesterone, the luteal phase of menstruation where fertilization of the egg happens is interrupted. This is why stress also has a direct affect on fertility.

During sleep our body goes into repair, deep restoration and detox mode. 🛌 But, we must be in PNS aka Parasympathetic Nervous System [rest and digest] state in order for this to happen.

Stress disrupts this PNS state and keeps us in SNS state, limiting our potential for healing. Stress increases cortisol levels, which decreases melatonin levels needed for deep sleep.

External stress from technology before bed directly impacts our circadian rhythm cycle [sleep-wake cycle]. Such as stimulation via bright lights, flashing, loud noises, unsettling plots/storylines in TV, drama etc. This signals the SNS rather than getting the body in PNS needed for restful sleep. EMF’s also play a role in sleep patterns.

A warm bedroom temperature or unbreathable bed linens can prevent restorative sleep. Similar to cold plunging, colder temperatures induce a PNS state via stimulation of the vagus nerve. While your body adjusts to the cold, sympathetic activity declines, while parasympathetic activity increases.

Our gut plays a significant role in sleep! If there is any internal stress via infection, pathogens, leaky gut, or overgrowth it disrupts melatonin conversion and serotonin production crucial for rest.

Our thoughts provoke stress as well via the gut-brain axis. The brain is directly connected to the gut.

Thoughts focused on the past typically signal feelings of depression, shame, guilt, regret and thoughts focused on the future signal feelings of anxiety and worry [all derivatives of fear].

Over-thinking not only impacts our mental health but our physical health as well. In functional medicine the body is seen as a whole rather than separate parts.

If your head is hitting the pillow and a million thoughts come to mind or “what if” scenarios, your body will remain in fight or flight mode.

So what are some tips?

The gut microbiome is one of the most crucial factors in immunity, metabolism, hormone balance, nutrition, & mental health.

Stress directly affects our gut microbiome in multiple ways.

How does stress affect digestion?

1. instead of blood being pulled towards your stomach to properly digest food, it is pulled to your extremities. This impacts digestion time and efficacy.

2. when stressed, we don’t chew our food as much, take as many bites and eat at a fast speed. It causes the food breakdown in the mouth [starch to glucose] to not be as productive.

3. it decreases saliva, enzyme amylase production, so starches are not being broken down properly.

4. the LES (lower esophageal sphincter) constricts. This causes food to remain in the stomach longer than needed.

5. it can even cause acid reflux since the food is sitting in the stomach that likely has low stomach acid content. When the stomach does not have high stomach acid, the esophageal sphincter remains open, causing acid reflux. Low stomach acid leads to food fermenting in the gut causing gas. Think of a balloon (stomach) full of helium (gas). Low stomach acid also allows for parasites, bacteria, yeast & viruses to thrive.

6. the liver will not drop as much bile because of the presence of low stomach acid. Typically, the two different pH levels of bile and stomach acid create an emulsification effect. When there isn’t enough stomach acid, bile isn’t released into the intestine allowing for parasites and bacteria to move through the gut wall [pH isn’t acidic enough].

7. the peristaltic movement of the GI tract moving food is decreased. This leads to constipation, diarrhea, bowel irregularities, food fermentation, SIBO etc.

8. intestinal permeability is increased which leads to inflammation. Stress opens up the gaps in the intestine to allow undigested food particles, fatty-acids, pathogens, toxins, metals seep through into the bloodstream. Other factors like antibiotics, NSAIDS and alcohol increase intestinal permeability. These substances circulate through the blood stream causing a cytokine response [communicative proteins that tell the immune system how to react]

Is it the gluten itself or the p3sticides on gluten that’s to blame?

There’s a reason that in other countries like those in Europe people aren’t affected by gluten. They can eat bread every day and have no issues.

Gluten is in everything in Italy— think about all the pastas and breads eaten. But, it’s one of the healthiest countries.

For us in the US, gluten causes major issues. So, what’s the difference??

Perhaps, the immense exposure of p3sticides. Many studies back this up.

Here’s a few ways gluten impacts the body.

One way I did not mention is the impact of mycotox!ns found in gluten. Gluten and other grains contain higher levels of mycotox!ns than other foods. These contribute to intestinal permeability, cause a histamine response, lower !mmun3 function, affect gut health and hormonal balance.

Do you notice an increase in symptoms up to 72 hours after gluten consumption? Tell me in the comments!

If you want to know your p3sticide and p3sticide-related levels, gut health, and/or food sensitivities, schedule a free 30 minute consult with me today to chat about functional lab options. DM me “🍞” and I’ll send you the link to book.
