As we near the end of Mental Health Awareness Month, we thought sharing information about everyday anxiety versus an anxiety disorder might be helpful.

We all get anxious sometimes; however, it becomes a problem when it interferes with our everyday life. Sometimes we need a therapist for either type—whether we are moving through a new stage of life, experiencing a loss, or have struggled with anxiety for years.

Whatever your challenge, we are happy to provide support if we can. Mental health IS health, and you are worth the investment in your health and well-being. 🌟

When our kids are anxious, our instinct is to try to “fix” it. But did you know the secret to lowering a teenager’s anxiety often starts with how we treat ourselves?
Our practice owner, Jenn Birch, recently shared the powerful link between parental self-compassion and reduced adolescent anxiety.
Anxiety is contagious, but so is calm. When we meet our own parenting mistakes or worries with harsh self-criticism, we accidentally raise the stress levels in the home. But when we practice self-compassion—giving ourselves grace during the hard moments—we naturally bring down the temperature in the room. By lowering the pressure on ourselves, we inadvertently lower it on them.

Anxiety in kids and teens can be tricky—it often doesn’t present the way we think it should, and as parents, we often struggle with how to help.
At Birch Therapy, anxiety is one of the primary challenges we see families facing. To help, we have two blogs on our website packed with resources to help you support your anxious child:
The SPACE Approach: In March, Laurel Tobias presented to our team about a revolutionary approach for parents of anxious children called SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions). This method works specifically with parents and highlights two crucial steps: reducing accommodation and increasing support.
Recognizing the Signs: Our May blog, written by clinical intern Savannah Stocker,, shares valuable information about how anxiety actually presents in kids and teens, along with additional techniques parents can use to help.
You don’t have to navigate this alone. Visit our website to read the blogs, or schedule a discovery call today to find out how we can support you and your child. 💛

Our Parent Coach, Laura Brimberry, shares some important mindful practices for parents. From stepping outside to regulate your nervous system to practicing the art of the apology, these four shifts can transform the “water” your family swims in. Remember: your kids don’t need a superhero; they just need you. 🌿✨

Healing isn’t just for you—it’s for the generations coming after you. 🤍

As Gabor Maté suggests, children are deeply affected by the “emotional water” we provide. Prioritizing our therapy, setting boundaries, and practicing self-regulation isn’t selfish; it’s environmental care for our family’s soul.

We find that parents will do anything to get help and support for their children, but often don’t prioritize their own needs. Your needs and your health matter. If we can support you or help you find a resource, please reach out to us.

Let’s keep the water clear. 🐠

Libby is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker Associate with nearly a decade of experience across the continuum of mental health care. A native North Carolinian and a “Double Wolfpack” alumna, she earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Social Work from North Carolina State University.

Her professional journey has spanned group homes, community non-profits, and home-based services, giving her a deep, 360-degree understanding of the challenges facing today’s youth. Libby’s approach is rooted in the belief that connection is the most powerful force in the therapy room.

Clinical Specializations & Modalities:

Person-Centered Care: Libby treats every client as the expert on their own life, tailoring treatment to their unique goals.

Strengths-Based Approach: Rather than focusing solely on “problems,” Libby identifies and amplifies the existing resilience within a child or family.

Integrative Techniques: She skillfully blends Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT), Mindfulness, and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) to facilitate holistic healing.

Libby prioritizes curiosity, joy, and psychological safety above all else, ensuring that clients of all ages feel seen, understood, and supported as they navigate their healing journey. Schedule a discovery call on our website to learn more about working with Libby.

Welcome to “Maycember!”
We have reached the heart of spring and the cusp of summer! Many call this season “Maycember” due to the surge in end-of-year activities—concerts, parties, graduations, and more. We know many of you are right in the thick of it!

Mental Health Awareness Month
May is also Mental Health Awareness Month, and we are honored to share information and resources on this vital topic all month long. To kick things off, we are thrilled to announce that White Memorial is hosting a three-part parenting workshop series this month. Our very own Parenting Coach, Laura Brimberry, will be presenting! Having the opportunity to share information that helps parents better support their children is at the core of what we do.

Honoring Mothers
As we navigate this busy month, we also want to take a moment to celebrate Mother’s Day. We see the incredible heart and tireless energy you pour into your families, and we hope you feel seen, valued, and deeply appreciated this weekend.

New on the Website: Play Therapy vs. Playful Therapy
We’ve also added new content to our website addressing a question we often hear during initial conversations: “What is the difference between Play Therapy and Playful Therapy?” We invite you to check it out to learn more about how these modalities support child development.

A Gentle Reminder
In the midst of the Maycember madness, we hope you find a moment to pause and breathe. Please remember: Mental health IS health. 😌

As we conclude Autism Acceptance Month, we want to share a few intentional ways to make your interactions more comfortable and inclusive. Small changes in how we communicate can make a world of difference in reducing anxiety and building genuine connections.

At Birch Therapy, we believe that Acceptance means adjusting the environment to fit the person, rather than asking the person to mask their needs to fit the environment. Thank you for helping us build a more neuro-affirming community!

“When Things Get Too Loud” follows a boy named Bo as he explores and experiences the world around him. From meeting a small snail to making a new friend, this book uses a “feel o meter” to help Bo track how interactions make him feel. For individuals with Autism, all feelings, even the exciting ones, can feel huge! This book explores just how big and just how small feelings can get, and how Bo takes care of himself through them all. Content provided by Kristin Bailey, LCSWA
