Reprogramming the subconscious mind away from unwanted automatic responses, recalibrating the nervous system from the effects of trauma, unlearning ways of thinking and being that don't serve our elevation, all require us to commit to the journey of healing, with all the ups and downs.
When we do our best, when we commit to our healing, even through the hard parts, we get to learn about ourselves, our preferences, patterns, projections and our triggers. We get to identify our strengths and areas we want to improve. We get to create healthy boundaries and remove walls. We get to tap into our resiliency, and navigate challenges with curiosity rather than fear. We get to clarify and live in alignment with our values.
We essentially become students of our own mind and body. Doing this work allows us to see ourselves clearly, build self-trust, self-esteem, and self-confidence.
The peace that comes from healing is priceless. The wisdom we gain about ourselves in the process is what helps us maintain it, and is just as valuable.

Shadow work is bringing to awareness parts that we deny and suppress into our subconscious.

Beginning early, and throughout life, certain aspects of ourselves are reinforced as "good" and others are punished.

As a result we, over time, learn to suppress the parts of ourselves that we see as undesirable. We do this to keep ourselves safe, avoid feelings of shame, and guilt, or to receive things we desires such as praise, love and attention.

Shadow parts are suppressed into our subconscious mind, but they don't go away. Our shadow can show up as projections, judgements, patterns, and triggers.

Shadow self often gets a bad rap because people think it can only consist of "bad" aspects of ourselves.

However the shadow self is unique to each person. Suppressed parts can include one's authentic voice, personal power, and emotional sensitivity.

Shadow work is not about labeling parts of ourselves as good or bad. It's about integrating and honoring the truth of our whole self into our conscious awareness.

Making decisions or responding when we are flooded with emotion and stress hormones can ruin experiences, relationships, and opportunities.

We can put some space between our feelings and actions by stopping to pause and reflect.

1. Focus on taking slower, deeper breaths. Slow deep breaths send "I'm safe" signals to our mind and nervous system. These breaths help the desire to respond feel less urgent.

2. Observe what is going on internally. Where do I feel this in my body? What story am I telling myself about what just happened?

3. Ask yourself, would it be beneficial to see this situation from a different perspective?

4. What do I need to own in my reaction and what did I learn about myself that will help me move forward?

5. Determine what outcome would be most beneficial and what response gives the best chance to get there.

The practice of pausing for mindful reflection empowers and liberates us from being controlled by our emotions.

• We don't meditate to become good at meditating. We meditate to practice re-focusing our thoughts and attention.

• During meditation our mind wanders, and we practice bringing our attention back to our breath, affirmations/mantras, sounds, body awareness, or whatever we are choosing to focus on.

• With consistent meditation, over time, we gain mastery of our thoughts and attention. This translates in our increased ability to regulate emotions, tolerate distress, control impulses, reduced anxiety, feeling more centered, grounded, and at peace.

• We receive so many messages daily, telling us what we should do, think, and fear. Being the programmer of our own mind, staying grounded in our own truths and authenticity, and getting still so that we can receive our own divine guidance is a beautiful act of self-love.

• Get still and breathe.
