It is not a coincidence that Fathers Day and Men's Health Awareness Month are both in June. What better gift to give your dad (or any man) this Fathers Day than the gift that you care of about their health.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men in the United States, killing 384,886 men in 2021—that’s about 1 in every 4 male deaths.

To reduce the chances of getting heart disease, the CDC says it’s important to do the following:

Know your blood pressure. Having uncontrolled blood pressure can result in heart disease. High blood pressure has no symptoms so it’s important to have your blood pressure checked regularly.

Talk to your health care provider about whether you should be tested for diabetes. Having diabetes raises your risk of heart disease.

Quit smoking. If you don’t smoke, don’t start.

Discuss checking your cholesterol and triglyceride levels with your health care provider.

Make healthy food. Having overweight or obesity raises your risk of heart disease. Learn more about overweight and obesity.

Limit alcohol intake to one drink a day.

Lower your stress level and find healthy ways to cope with stress.

Happy Fathers Day and Happy Men's Health Awareness Month!

Understanding BP Readings

What do my numbers mean?
What's the difference between systolic and diastolic?
Do I have normal blood pressure?

These are some common questions people have about blood pressure. The only way to diagnose High Blood Pressure (HBP) is to know your numbers through regular BP spot checks and to understand your results.

● Systolic BP (the top number) lets us know how much force your blood is placing on your artery walls when the heart beats.

● Diastolic BP (the bottom number) is how much force your blood is placing on your artery walls when the heart is resting.

● While both numbers can be used to diagnose HBP, more attention is given to systolic BP because it's a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease in those age 50+.

● The American Heart Association recommends using the chart below to gauge your cardiovascular health. There are 5 categories: Normal, Elevated, HBP Stage 1, HBP Stage 2, and Hypertensive Crisis.

Consult your healthcare provider about your blood pressure measurements and how your readings relate to your overall health and wellbeing.
