Nearly 1 in 10 people who menstruate have endometriosis, and many simply endure the pain and other symptoms that can interfere with their everyday lives.

“Many patients with endometriosis who come to see me have been suffering for a long time because they’ve been told their symptoms are ‘normal,’” says Kathy Huang, MD, a minimally invasive gynecologic surgeon and director of NYU Langone’s Endometriosis Center. “But pain is not normal.”

This article from NYU Langone Health takes a closer look at six symptoms of endometriosis you should never ignore:

“What is endometriosis?” was digitally searched more than 31 million times in 2018. While the disease affects an estimated 190 million women worldwide, many have not heard of the condition, let alone its symptoms.

While we treat many different issues in pelvic therapy involving the urinary, GI, and reproductive systems, the majority of our patients come to us with some type of pain. Many of them have had pain for an extended period of time, and often no one has been able to help them find relief or even explain why they are having pain. It is highly distressing to be experiencing chronic pain, particularly when it appears to be a ‘mystery!’

Tension of the pelvic and surrounding musculature can cause pelvic, abdominal, hip, and low back pain, and this has been the subject of many past (& future) blog posts. That's why in this blog, we will be offering an overview of known diagnoses related to or causing pelvic pain so that we will all be familiar with the terminology.

One of the greatest supporters in life is your pelvis. Not only does it keep your bladder and other internal organs from falling out, but it’s also the reason you can use the bathroom without incident. Yet even the pelvis is not immune to Father Time. Aging decreases pelvic function, explains Uchenna (UC) Ossai, DPT, a pelvic health physical therapist at YouSeeLogic.

Even if your pelvis feels completely fine now, you want to watch any warning signals that your pelvic floor is not doing too well. Take a look at this recent article from SheKnows.com to learn more about four weak pelvic floor symptoms that you shouldn't ignore:

Pelvic floor health is a critical aspect of a woman's overall well-being. These muscles also play a vital role in s*xual function, childbirth, and bowel and bladder control. Weak or dysfunctional pelvic floor muscles can lead to a range of health issues, including urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and s*xual dysfunction.

Despite the importance of pelvic floor health, many women lack education and awareness about this topic. In many cultures, it is considered taboo or embarrassing, leading to shame and a lack of discussion about it. Furthermore, the medical community has historically placed less emphasis on women's health concerns, leading to a lack of research and education about pelvic floor health specifically.

With that in mind, we strongly encourage you to check out this recent article from Forbes on The rise and importance of women's pelvic floor health awareness:

Four industry experts share why pelvic floor health is a critical aspect of a woman's overall wellbeing.

Nagging backache. Constipation. Incontinence. Painful in*******se. These symptoms could point to all kinds of problems — including trouble with your pelvic floor. Because the organs that the pelvic floor supports are all connected, symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction may overlap.
