I came into 2025 with tons of optimism… about running. I had signed up for the 2025 Chicago Marathon before I’d even finished the NYC Marathon in 2024. I was that confident!
It would be my 9th marathon, my 5th in 3 years… at age 60! (A sweet friend reminded me that 5 marathons in 3 years is a lot at any age) I’d always pretty insistently taken a full year off between marathons. Nonetheless, I was signed up and I had plans!
Early in 2025, everything felt great… until it didn’t.
I adjusted my plans all summer long, I narrowed my focus to each week, each workout, each tiny improvement. Slowly, I got back to running.. attempt, adapt, adjust.
I ran my race, felt great the entire 26.2 miles and ran thru that finish with a huge smile!
And then, after a fun trail race the next weekend, I let it all go. I ran some, walked a lot. I’d finished my races and met those goals.
I was determined to stick with my plan to finish 2025 rested!
So I hadn’t looked at my 2025 mileage because I didn’t want to be tempted to hit an arbitrary number in December.
This week, I finally did the math and was pleasantly surprised.
I ran 581 miles.
Not my highest (around 700), but higher than most years, and kind of impressive since I ran ONE mile all of July (due to the injury), and 3 miles all of December (due to my bad attitude about cold weather.)
I walked 554 miles.
I walk on days I don’t run, usually around 30-40 mi/month.
Breaking 500 is notable.
While I was tracking my weekly mileage, and subbing a lot of walking when I couldn’t run, I hadn’t tallied the months.
In August I walked 81 miles, and in July, I walked 102 miles!
Alll that walking got me to where I needed to be to run Chicago.
All this to say, there are as many ways to move as there are people.
I encourage you to get out and find what suits you, your life, and your goals. Find your joy! 👟🩵
