I met Jeff Galloway in February of 2013 at the Disney Princess Half Marathon Expo. I had been hit by an SUV while out on a training run in January (very minor injuries, all things considered) just a couple of weeks after transitioning to run/walk training for this first half marathon. I was so glad to have the opportunity to tell him that if I hadn’t discovered run/walk, I probably wouldn’t have gone back to running. But knowing that I could get thru a few minutes running then take a break gave me the confidence to continue my training and finish that race!

Later that year, I was waiting to run the Disneyland Half Marathon. There was some commotion (apparently there was a medical situation closer to the start line) and a group on segways wheeled Galloway into our corral! He’s so unassuming, I think a lot of people had no idea who he was. I said hey and reintroduced myself. He said, “I remember you, Raleigh, car crash, right?!” 🙃 I had the honor of running with him for about a mile at the start of the race. Calm, quiet energy, curious about every runner around him, enjoying the pretty California morning.

I had a few more chances to say hey, and he’d always smile and say “Raleigh, car crash!”

I hadn’t seen him in a few years, but he’s on my mind pretty much every run. His philosophy got me thru dozens of half and full marathons, and especially Chicago last fall. He’s a big part of how I ran thru that finish, strong and smiling!
💙💚
He’s a big part of my passion for helping other runners. The running community has lost a legend. He will be missed, but his legacy will live on in each of us. 👟💙💚
